Hi All. I am new to this forum and am not sure if I have posted to the correct section. I am a long-time Sig user, but not yet an owner. My duty weapon at work is a P228.

I was thinking of purchasing a P226, as a friend of mine is looking to sell his and buy another gun. I was hoping to get the "good buddy" discount, however I do not want to low-ball him too much on the price. I really want the gun, and can't really afford it, but I hesitate on the chance to get one at a good price, especially one in like-new condition. I need a personal weapon for off-duty training. He asked me to give him a reasonable offer, and is willing to offer it to me 1st before putting it up for sale. Maybe you guys can give me an idea of what this setup is worth, and what a reasonable offer might be.

This is what he is offering:
-Sig P226, 9mm (<90 rounds fired, looks brand new), paid $715 NEW in TN
-3-dot Trijicon night sights
-nitron finish
-factory short trigger (any of you guys find this beneficial?)
-1- 17rd. mag. (LEO stamped), purchased afterward [does this mag. hang out the bottom of the grip because it is so long?]
-2- 10 rd.mag. (I find this a problem because I need at least 3 high-cap. 15-rd mags for service carry. What is the going price for 15-rd.mags?)

BTW, he originally stated he might let it go for $625, but I think he might want a little more after he found his receipt and discovered what the current price of a new 226 was going for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Without going into many details, $650 would be a most excellent price for
a LNIB (like new in box, with doc's) SIG P226 set-up like you have
explained. Figure the 17 round mag at 'bout $45, and the ten round mag's
at from $18 to $25 depending on make. Factory Trijicon night sights are
roughly $100, but I'm not sure of the extra cost of the nitron finish. So,
yes if he says from between $625-650 grab it while you can~!:uhoh: :)

BTW, Welcome To The High Road~!:D

$625 is a good price for what you describe.

The "short trigger" is good for people with small hands. It basically decreases the reach for your trigger finger. If you have big hands, you actually might not like this. See if he will let you dry-fire (or better yet, shoot) the gun first to make sure you like the trigger.

SIG charges $100 to install a short trigger, so I imagine putting back the original trigger must be the same cost. Plus you would have shipping and wait time, which would push your total cost up to $725 plus a 2-3 week wait. Then you'd be wondering if you shouldn't have just bought a new gun instead. SIG also has a "certified pre-owned" deal, which can be a good deal.

I would say if you like the trigger the way it is, the deal is a go.

My 17 round Mec-gar's do not protrude below the mag-well at all, they are the exact same size as the "sig" branded (I think also made by mec-gar) 15 rounders that I have.

I have an old P226 (west german markings) and it runs like a clock with either mag.

Gentleman,
Thanks for the word on the price, the 17-rd mag and the short trigger. I am in a strange predicament in that my friend's gun is actually in another state at family's house. I would be buying sight unseen...not a problem since it has barely been touched. But I would not be able to try the short trigger. I have shot 228s and 229s with the standard trigger with no problem. I may have shot a short trigger once, but don't recall whether it made a difference. I am 5-11 and 200 pounds with average-size hands (glove size Large). My friend is 6-ft.+ and 180-190 pounds. I will have to ask him why he got the short trigger. Could be hard to find a short trigger around here to test, as I went to 3 shops today and did not notice any Sigs tagged as having a short trigger.

Really, I don't think a short trigger would make a bit of difference in the
world~!:uhoh: If I wanted a SIG P226, this is a most excellent deal.:D

BTW, I don't like buying sight unseen; but if you know this person
and are willing to accept the grading of his firearm, then go for it.

Yeah, I don't like buying sight-unseen either. But I have known this guy for going on 18 years and was in his wedding. He has an eye for the finer things in life, including firearms, and from what I have seen, takes meticulous care of them. So I would think of dropping the cash....it's just a big chunk for Sigs, even if it is a deal. You get what you pay for when you are buying one of the finest handguns on the planet.........:)

I have a pair of standard triggers from a 228; pretty sure they'll fit the 226 with no worries. You can have one for postage, install is easypeasy, and you can probably get ~$30 for the shorty to offset the higher price of the gun.

Email me if interested: porter_t_dog at hotmail dot com.

Thanks!

Porterdog,
Thanks for that offer. I may have to take you up on that. I need to start dealing with my friend and get a committment for a purchase. Hopefully he has not sold it yet, as I have been stalling.:scrutiny:

I looked at a lot of CPO Sigs yesterday, and I must say there were positives and negatives to that deal. The prices were good and the condition of the firearms often looked great. It seems that you often lose on the extras, like hi-cap mags and sights. Most of the guns with night sights that I looked at were dim or burned out....especially used (non-CPO) weapons. Most guns came with 10-rd. mags, which are useless for my purposes, and maybe one hi-cap. I NEED all the extras, not just WANT them....so when you add up having to pay for new night sights, paying sales tax or buying extra hi-caps (3 minimum) the CPO deal does not look as sweet....at least compared to the like-new gun with a known history that I may obtain from my friend. Doesn't help that $$ is tight right now. Otherwise, if I had no ideas of using the gun at work, I would not hesitate to buy CPO. :scrutiny:

FWIW, my son bought a 226 from CDNN a month or so ago for $389 delivered to his FFL. That included night sights and one 15 round mag in a SIG factory case. Additional new 15 round factory mags are $30 each (sounds like you'll have to buy two of 'em in any case.) While it clearly was not a like-new gun it was in very nice shape and all flaws were cosmetic. It has functioned perfectly the three times we've been to the range together, and the other times he's gone alone. He has put close to 1000 rounds through it with no failures of any kind. He could replace the night sights if need be, and still be way ahead of the deal you're looking at, albeit with not as nice-looking a gun.

$389 is a pretty awesome price for any functioning Sig full-size or compact! However, some of the guns I looked at for under $500 seemed a little sloppy...the gun was rattling when I shook it. One reputable shop here showed me a used 226....looked great for a great price until I took out the mag and it was completely covered in rust. This is the kind of thing that scares me from buying sight unseen. But for the price you stated, I will have to check out CDNN.

I confess that he may have paid the extra $20 for "Hand Select" treatment and not told me about it, to impress me with his gun buying acumen (this was his first gun purchase.) Even at that, the thing still strikes me as an awfully nice gun for not a lot of cash.

Those are great prices. I think my friend stated that he spent around $40 for a 17-rd. mag.....rediculous...but that was probably a couple years ago. Still trying to get hold of him to make the buy...but out-of-town business trip is hampering communication.
