Hey yall. I have owned my factory certified pre-owned (red box) Sig P320 Carry model since fall of 2019. The pistol has a born on date of October 2018, based on the markings present on the grip module. It has all the factory upgrades from what I can tell.

When I purchased the handgun, it appeared as if it was unfired, with no wear present on the barrel or corresponding areas. I really enjoy this gun much more so than previous Glocks/M&Ps that I owned. My one concern is steel case ammo. I understand Sig does not recommend steel case, as do most manufacturers. I ran tons of the Tula and Wolf steel through my various Glock 19s and M&Ps over the years and malfunctions were almost non-existant, but would have from time to time.

Since purchasing my 320, I have put in the neighborhood of 4-600 rounds through the gun, with approximately 60-70% steel case and the rest brass. Every time I go to the range I notice a handful of malfunctions with steel case ammo, all of which of some form of failure to eject. Most often, the handgun will fire, and the slide will lock back with half of the spent case hanging out of the chamber. This is always easily remedied by removing the magazine, working the slide and returning the magazine to continue firing.

My 320 has never experienced a failure with brass case ammo of any type. I am just wondering is it the ammo, the gun, me, or a combination of all three. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I don't own a Sig , but generally speaking any gun can be finicky about certain ammunition. Your situation clearly indicates that your Sig does not like steel casings. Don't feed it what bit doesn't like.

That said , I do not use steel cased ammunition in any of my firearms. I am no expert but - it seems logical to me that
a) Guns were designed with brass casings in mind
b) Steel , being harder than brass , must result in a different - and by that I mean harsher - type of impact with the working components of the firearm than the softer metal would.

I like my guns. I do not like the idea of steel casings banging around against all of those finely machined components. Aluminum? Occasionally. Steel? Never.

Sigs are known for high quality , and they don't come cheap.
Would you shell out top dollar for a well bred dog and then feed it a diet of table scraps?
Heck , I won't even feed my lawn mower any ethanol blend.

I have a P320RX. I don't remember it having a failure with brass case ammo but had one round fail to extract while using Tulammo. When doing an internet search regarding P320 extractor issues I saw enough discussions to replace the extractor. They're inexpensive and easy to change. I don't have enough rounds through it with the new extractor to know that it corrected it. I also know that steel case ammo may cause extraction issues that you wouldn't ordinarily see with brass ammo.

If you don’t like steel cased ammo, don’t use it. I have shot a lot of steel cased ammo in my Glocks. They don’t seem to mind at all. Steel cased, steel jackets, whatever. I have never seen any evidence that they have done any harm at all.

Having said that, I don’t know if I would feel the same about My old Sig p228. Likely not. But I have shot a bunch of Aluminum cased through it. It loves Blaser.

Back a few months ago Wally’s was selling Winchester USA Forged steelcased 9mm for $11 for a big box of 150 rounds. I bought 8 boxes on the spot. This ammo stinks like crazy but it is very accurate and my Gen3 Glock 17 and 19 both shoot it very nicely with no ill effects to either. And I went through all 1,200 rounds relatively quickly.

So I don’t necessarily want or need to shoot steelcased pistol ammo. But in the unlikely event I come across a deal like this again for this Win USA Forged 9mm ammo, I’m buying all I can lay my hands on. If the guns don’t mind, I don’t either, and the targets can’t tell the difference anyway!

What some nations like Russia, Chinese, and the former Eastern Block all use steel cased ammo aside from .22 rimfires? Come to think of it, are steel cased .22 rimfires even available? I have never seen or even heard of any.
