My LGS has a P226 in 45 ACP for sale. I thought it was a P220, but it says P226 Stainless on the black (nitron?) slide and the barrel says 45 ACP. Was this a special run?

I've never heard of a P226 in .45ACP from the factory but with Sig you never know. Sig will make special runs of guns for any agency willing to foot the bill.

But... how would a .45 P226 work? It can't have a staggered column magazine, unless the mag was really fat. You could pad the magazine and make it single stack, but then why not just buy a P220 (which is essentially the exact same gun, but single stacked.)

I don't think the Sig 226 mag is long enough for a .45 ACP, so they'd have to use a longer mag and a longer mag well (meaning a complete redesign of the grip) I don't see how they could do it. If it turns out that it really is a 226 in .45 ACP, that'd be one interesting setup. Any chance of pics?

Could it a be 226 slide on a 220 frame? Not sure that'd work though.

WOW. Never ever heard of such a beast and can't imagine it would be possible but you never know what kind of frankenSIG will show up. Can you get a picture?? Is it brand new?? What kind of magazines does it use - single stack or double stack? If it is used I sure as hell would not want to be the first person to fire it.

A .45 ACP round is too long to fit in either a 226 9mm/.40 S&W mag, or 226 grip.
A conversion barrel is out of the question because the rounds won't fit in the gun.

NO it doesn't.
The magwell isn't long enough, front to rear, to fit the .45ACP cartridge and the cartridge won't fit into the 226 magazine.
Even if someone tried to swap a 226 slide onto a 220 frame, it wouldn't run because the extractor wouldn't be located correctly.
What I would initially suspect is that it is a domestically manufactured 226 (nitron coated stainless slide) which someone assembled with a barrel from a 220...which wouldn't run correctly even if you could get the cartridges to fit, as the locking block would be set for incorrect timing...or it is a mis-marked barrel. The other possibility would be someone trying to create FrankenSig 226 chambered in .45 GAP

See if you can go back to your LGS and look at the muzzle end of the slide and also remove and look at the mag. If the inside barrel diameter looks smaller than .45ACP (compare it to a P220's or a .45ACP 1911's muzzle) and the mag looks like a normal staggered stacked P226 mag (check for caliber markings on the mag itself), then it is most likely a P226 with a mis-marked barrel. However, if the barrel opening looks like it is correct for .45ACP and the mag is a 8rd single stack mag, you most likely have a P220 with a mis-marked slide.

Jimfern, it looks like a P226 chambered for the .40 S&W. If you look closely at the stamping on the barrel it sure looks like .40 S&W. That particular model is available with 10 round magazines and the magazine shown is not for the P220.

1858's got it right. The shop has it listed wrong. it's a .40.

I've owned a 220 and that magazine is definately not a 220 mag. looks like a double stack moch like the sig mags for 9 mm. I do know that the Ma state police are issued the 226 in 40 S&W so there is a good chance that the caliber is a typo.

If I can recall correctly (memory isnt what it use to be), the original P220 was chambered for 9mm, then 45acp and 38 super. all single stack magazine and frame. I have also heard of a few in 9x21.
