Sig Sauer p226 vs. Colt 1911

Are the Colt 1911 and the Sig P226 the only semi-autos ever made? lol...

If you want to know which one is better that depends on what you're looking for. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Both are overall great guns.

Pointless argument. You will never, ever, get a consensus as there is no definitive set of finite/discreete variables by which one can make the judgement.

Might as well ask what is the best firearm ever made, from matchlock to modern? Again, if you asked 1000 people, you'd get 1000 differing opinions.

And we all know what opinions are like, as we all have 'em :D

At least it's not 1911 vs Glock this time.

I would say the 1911 (and not necessarily Colt :uhoh: ) is the best all-around multi-purpose handgun ever. It may not be the definitive best ever, and I'm not saying it is.

Sig, on the other hand, ranks right up there as another great all-around multi-purpose handgun.

Once you get proficient with both triggers,it simply comes down to the trade-off of caliber vs. capacity. That will be determined by the application that you need to carry the gun for or simply personal preference.

Or I guess you could just get a Sig 1911 and end the debate forever.:neener:

I think the OP is simply looking for an opinion, and not a lot of qualitfications. So, for what it's worth, between the two, I'll take the 1911-A1 of my choice. Sig makes a top shelf auto. I would not discount Sigs. My preference between three of the top autos in .45 ACP is 1911, HK 45, and Sig 220. I wouldn't feel "without" with either.

The 1911 offers me more
  • Great ergoniomics, but yet the HK 45 is close
  • Points extremely well and naturally
  • Is very slinder, and easliy concealed. Yet the HK 45 is polymer, and very light.
  • The trigger on a 1911 can not be easily matched.
  • There are more aftermarket supports for the 1911 than any other handgun. Sig support isn't bad, and HK has a poor reputation.

If you are comparing platforms 226 9mm vs 1911 in .45 ACP, then it is just a platform consideration, and is really a matter of choice and preference. The items above still hold for all of the strong suites of the 1911. There is something to be said for DA/SA autos. Their first pull is generally so long and hard that it has to be intentional.

Good Point ;)

That would imply that guys need a reason to debate gun prowess. :)

I definitely agree with you there.

When the 226 first entered the marketplace it was a Browning. Browning intended it as a replacement for the High Power which was more expensive to produce. It was the first pistol we had seen with stampings and folded sheet metal and it was not well received. Browning cancelled the deal with SIG and after a year or so the gun reappeared as the SIG Sauer. (I'll bet somebody at Browning caught hell over that!).

I didn't like the idea of a "stamped" handgun either - until I tried one of the new Brownings and it shot like a champ, even better than the High Power it replaced.

Browning went back to the High Power but it was then made in Portugal where labor costs were much less.

I carried a p226 in the line of duty for several years, and there is no question about the goodness of the gun. But for me personally, I'll take a 1911, a high power, or a CZ75.

I have worked for a few SF guys and one SEAL who when asked always start their list with "Colt 1911" and then the list usually goes "Hi Power, and Sig 226" in that order. I have taken this to heart and carry an officer's model 1911 as my EDC.

Well, that comes from the guys who actually use the so-called best sidearms. Seems the Colt 1911 is the winner.

So why, pray tell, did the SEALs pick the P226 9mm as their sidearm, when they could have had anything they wanted?

As a BBQ gun, nothing beats a gussied-up 1911. Heck, if you have the time to work on and test the reliability of you 1911, it would make the best fighting handgun available.

However, if I had to grab a gun that I expected to work perfectly out of the box, with no function testing, it would be the 226, not the 1911 (any brand).

I have a Colt XSE Government and a 226 and 226ST and am more accurate with the 226's. All of my friends are too. But my favorite gun is my 220ST and I think it is a better comparison to a Colt 1911 (since they are both single stack .45's).

I believe that even the 1911 fans (including myself) will have to concede this point. :D

I'd probably be like, "Hey, what an incredibly unlikely scenario, good thing TSHTF while I was in someplace filled with strange to me NIB handguns, now what will I... oh damn, they got me." ;)

I suppose I do have to concede the point however.
