I got a lightly used SP2022 and the gun looks great. The mags OTOH look terrible.

I am sure they are perfectly functional, but the phosphate coating on the mags look terrible.

I was going to get some additional factory mags, but I think I'll get the 17 rounders from Mec-Gar, they appear to have a much better finish.

I am truly surprised that Sig Sauer would use such a crappy coating on their mags. I was under the impression that Sig Sauer is a premium pistol and they use premium stuff.

The mags in my polymer EAA Witness have a nicer finish.

The mags are made by Mecgar at least mine are since they are stamped made in Italy. Newer ones might be made by Checkmate but I do not think they changed those over. If you are not happy with the OEM finish chances are you are not going to like the Mecgar finish either. :banghead:

Greg Cote takes time to detail that the Mec-Gar 17 rounders have a superior finish. They are also $5 less to boot.

I have both and really don't consider the Mecgar superior. YMMV I am also not a fan of the Plus 2 base plate. It makes the grip area too long. IMHO

Do you just recommend that one gets the factory magazine?

I have no problem with them. I view mags a disposable wear items like springs. Their finish and look is not an issue for me. I drop them in the dirt, on concrete or whatever I happen to be standing on when I do a mag change.

If the finish wears it is not a real issue for me. I understand for many it is.

I do not like the +2 on the mecgar but that is completely a personal thing not a universal. If the +2 does not bother you it is hard to argue with the Mecgar 17 round mag.

What is wrong with the +2 Mec-Gar magazine?

It is not flush fit.

A magazine is a "disposable" item, what does it matter? As long as it works. So looks matter more than finish.

I'm just messing with you. My biggest thing is that Sig Sauer is supposed to be a premium brand, and the mags are not premium at all on the SP2022. I would gather that they are on the P226. It is just the principle that if the manufacturer pays attention to the finish of the magazine, would not they pay attention to the details of the pistol. I know most manufacturers don't make the mags, but they do specify HOW the mag is to be constructed. I gather that for the SP2022, Sig wanted to do it as cheap as possible.

I have a Ruger SR9 and the mags on that pistol are top notch. I have probably put over 2K rounds in one of my SR9s and the mags still look fantastic. I have used it in a few 3-gun and dropped the mags during a change, etc.

The SP2022 is a contract gun. It was designed to meet the spec of
The French police. It sells here for $400-$450 it is not a premium gun by any definition IMHO.

I agree the finish could be better but I don't lose any sleep over it. The reason I don't like the 17 round mags is because they change the grip profile and make a nice compact gun bulky on the belt.
