I have a Ruger 22/45, and I don't know, it's accurate, reliable, but I don't _LOVE_ it, and that I feel is wrong. My SKS was the black sheep in my collection, and I've since sold it. I don't love my 22/45, and I feel I shouldn't own a gun that I don't just overly love, like all my other guns..

So... When I save up enough $$$, I am thinking about getting another .22LR plinker/practice pistol.

The two I've got it down to is:

Sig Trailside
CZ Kadet.

I like the Trailside, accurate, but I hear about magzine problems and reliability issues.

I like the CZ Kadet, because I can get that as a kit, so I can have a standard .40SW also to shoot with. (and have my gf shoot it in .22LR)

The Trailside I have no doubts is more accurate, and I'm not a big fan of swapping barrels etc... I would like to keep a gun in one caliber... But having a choice does somewhat appeal to me as a libertarian..

So....

For me it's all about triggers. The Trailside has an unconventional but very usable trigger action. CZ's have junky-*** triggers with lots of creep and travel, at least the dozen or so I've met. So if you want to punch tiny groups in paper with your .22, the Trailside is probably a better choice. On the other hand, if you can already shoot well with your CZ, this may be a moot point.

If you want your .22 for practice, however, you should get the Kadet, as that's the primary point of a .22 conversion. Plus, swapping top ends will give you lots of field-stripping practice ;)

Plus, the Kadet kit does cost half what a Trailside costs...

Buy a CZ-75B, give it a trigger job, and then buy the Kadet Kit.

(You can buy the Kadet, outright, and it has the same frame as the 75B, but you won't be able to find a 9mm top-end for it...)

You'll end up with a gun that much more versatile (albeit a bit more expensive.)

My Kadet Kit, when mounted on my 75B frame (now replaced with an 85 Combat) proved to be as accurate as my Ruger Target competition (slabside); I traded the slabside away.

The Trailsides are from Switzerland..

Walt, the CZ "package" will end up being heavier, but I get two guns in one, and so it is almost not fair to compare prices at that point in time.

Oleg said it was relatively accurate...

I do like the CZ's quite a bit... But the Trailside is pretty sexy also..

Time to buy both!! Where's that piggy bank.....

Coincidentally after trying my first P7 this weekend I also got to shoot a Hammerli Trailside. The grip is un-freaking-believable! It's a great gun. I can't do it justice as far as accuracy. There's little to no recoil. Trigger is great. Oh, and did I mention the awesome grip?

Here's the kicker though. I picked up my P22 right afterward and realized that the Walther was just more "fun" to shoot. Plus I got it new for 1/3 the price of a used Trailside.

That being said, you won't regret the Trailside if you can get one. (They're not "legal" here in California anymore. :fire: ) Also, the grip is really nice on it...

Trailside Update

Actually, the California DOJ has recently exempted a whole bunch of .22 Pistols. They list the "Hammerli Trailside" as legal for sale in CA now. But I don't know if that includes the entire range (basic, target, competition). A call to DOJ would resolve that I bet though.

Somebody with half a brain figured out no gang-banger is going to hold up a liquor store with an Olympic style target pistol.

The entire Trailside series are available in Kali. I got my Trailside Competition and have put 1000rnds through it and only cleaned it twice, once when it was new and once after 300rnds. I only had some misfeeds in the first 20rnds, which were most likely due to breaking in a new .22 pistol with standard velocity ammo. I've had no problems whatsover, except I can't duplicate the tiny test group that came with the pistol. Get the Trailside, you won't regret it.

I gotta go with the CZ on this one. Yes the SIG guy just suggested a CZ over a SIG.

I just don't like the Trailside. They are very accurate, have pretty nice triggers but do not feel substantial and I have read a decent amout of negative comments about their overall durability. They just don't seem to be too tough.

The Kadet will not be a match target pistol but if you are looking for cheap real world practice it can't be beat.

Just my two cents.

Course I think everybody needs a Ruger Mark II or 22.45 but whatdoIknow :D

Although Ive not experience with the Trailside, I cut my teeth on Rugers/High standard 22's. Ill take the CZ..the one I shot didnt have a trigger job and still beat out the Ruger for accuracy. Just my .02$

Shoot well.

WHAT? Burn the heretic!!

Actually I'd have to agree with you. I looked at the trailside and found it to be ungainly. Of course, I do happen to love my 22/45 so the point is moot.

I just wish there was a .22lr conversion like the Kadet for my P220. (yes, I know one was made long ago in limited numbers, they're way too expensive to even contemplate) And while I"m deaming, let's make it post-AWB/mag limits and the magazine will be double+stacked to take advantage of the wide grip on a .45. That'd be what, about 30 rounds?

I don't know about you guys but my Trailside works GREAT.

I've never shot a CZ so I can't say. Trailsides are TIGHT new and take several rounds to loosen them up. Light most new TIGHT guns they shoot really well after broken in.... like mine. I've shot a really nice stainless .22 Ruger Competition version and it shot as nice as my Trailside but just much heavier.

I like the idea of the Kadet, but I have to agree that triggers are critical for a good .22, and the Trailside trigger kicks the CZ trigger to the curb.

The "Kit" of course...

...esp. if you're already thinking about getting a fullsize CZ75 anyway. You will definetely have the advantage of using a fullsize CZ75 with inexpensive ammo.Same trigger, same weight, same ergonomics, adjustable sights.....only difference will be the recoil.

The "Kit" of course... :)

Regards,

Hakan.
