I have a hankering for a Sig X5 Competition pistol, the only problem being they are EXPENSIVE! I handled an X5 tactical at a LGS about a year ago and really, really liked it. They wanted $1100 for it, lightly used, I walked away then changed my mind and called the store: it was already sold.

I don't shoot competitively but when I do shoot pistols I sure enjoy a good one. Right now in 9mm I've got a sweet CZ 75B-SA only, an H&K VP9 and a just completed, bobtailed, trigger-jobbed SA 1911.

The German-made X5 would be the most expensive if I added it to the fleet, around $1700 plus tax.

I've heard that Germany has blocked Sig from exporting fully made guns for whatever reason and that the possibility of finding a new X5 is close to zero.

So, any thoughts on the X5?

Would 4 handguns all in the same caliber be excessive?

Define "excessive".

I have quite a few guns in the same caliber (mainly 9mm. and .45 ACP), but I don't think there's too many of them as to consider that excessive. If you like the X5, (and really besides the price and some of those unusual color combinations), what is there not to like. But if you're thinking about getting one best make it soon. It appears the prices on these things have definitely been on the upswing and their limited availability all make for the X5 being a rather expensive proposition.

I think you've heard wrong, there are plenty of new x5's in the country. Well not plenty, they just don't make enough of them. And yes, they are worth the money. My x6 makes me look like a top shooter, and I'm really not.

"Excessive" is purely a subjective value judgment. Some people think that more than one gun in a given caliber is excessive. I'm at somewhere around ~45 different 9mm pistols right now, and I view my collection as woefully incomplete, but that's because this is a big-time hobby for me.

The Competition is an excellent value. I do really like the extra features on my X-Five and X-Six L1 models -- especially the adjustable trigger -- but it's definitely debatable whether the trigger, Nill grips, and a couple of non-MIM parts are worth such a hefty surcharge. The main parts of the Competition are no different from those of the L1; it's fit every bit as well and is just as outstandingly accurate. The Competition also has two things that I regard as essential in an X-Five -- steel frame and SAO trigger -- unlike the Tactical and All-Around variants.

I personally strongly prefer the Competition to its Gen2 replacement as well. The Competition has fewer MIM parts than the new X-Five Entry, and I absolutely detest the new styling and the ugly rails on the Gen2 guns. There are very few new Gen1 models left out there, and these are really wonderful pistols -- in such a different league from a stock P226 that it's hard to believe they come from the same company -- and we're not going to see any more of them new. I would strongly encourage you to grab this one.

Additionally, as you noted, the supply of German Mastershop-built X-Fives is drying up altogether, Gen2 included, because of the export ban. At some point this year, all production will shift to the United States. SIG Sauer (USA) under that flunky Ron Cohen has provided absolutely no rational basis for confidence that they'll be able to build something even close to the standards of the Mastershop. I expect a nosedive in quality, just as has been the case with the rest of the pistols produced over here. Get one while you can.

No, he's absolutely correct. There's no further importation taking place, and whatever is available or becoming available is just part of the remaining trickle in the distribution pipeline. The vast majority of the X-Fives and X-Sixes on Gunbroker have been sitting there for months, because almost all of them are either (1) the hideous red, green, blue, Scandic, etc. models, or (2) chambered in .40, which few people want in this gun, or (3) overpriced -- or some combination of these three things.

All of the German X-Fives and X-Sixes destined for the States are already here. Next up is the tragicomedy of Newington trying (or maybe not even trying, actually) to replicate the quality of Eckernförde as X-Series and P210 production shifts here.

Good to see that I'm not the only one put off by those horrible looking red, blue, and green finished guns. Seriously you would have to pay me to own one of those guns, notwithstanding the fact that it is an X5.

Buy it as soon as humanly possible and have zero regrets about it.

I like the look of the X5E models, but beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder.

By the way, you don't have to buy the $100ish X5 magazines, you can use Mec-Gar 20 round magazines (that cost around $26), you'll just have to whittle down the base pad a hair.

The only regret I have at the moment is that I can't get any accessories - I'd like to get the weight kit and an X6 slide. I can't imagine the new production line will screw up the weight kit, so it's just a matter of waiting.

They are even worse in person...:barf:

( a shop close by has them all :barf:)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I love my Scandic, not least because when my wife saw one she said that's pretty, you should get one of those.

What are you looking for in this gun? A sweet trigger, egro's, bulleye pistol?

I'm with Chris in va I would spend some money on upgrading the CZ SAO if it's a stock pistol. A tuned cz 75 SAO can have a crisp glass like trigger at 1.5lbs

That's just what people who like ugly guns say. ;)

Just kidding of course. I'm with the others though. I like my guns rather vanilla when it comes to finish.

I've wanted a stainless X5 All Around for several years. I've just never prioritized the money.

Thx, lgs had another black/ white today, tho it had black grips. Also an x6 with nice Birdseye grips but gold accents. My wife said get it and worked a price with the dealer. I turned them both down and bought a benelli legacy in 12 ga.
I think the lgs thinks I'm a moron!
Good luck with your search

These were all mastershop guns
As I understand it, these are German imports

Not sure if all x5/6 are tho, good question

Well, I went ahead and handled a stock Sig 226 yesterday thinking it may be somewhat similar in hand. I realize the X5 has a SA trigger but on balance, if the P226 is anything like the 226 X5, I don't think it's for me. It feels BIG and doesn't come on point for me as naturally as any of my other 9mm guns.

I'm going to save myself $1500 and stick with my CZ 75 SA.

Are all the x5 and x6 guns made in Germany, or are some made in the USA?

All of them produced so far are German Mastershop guns, but no more are being imported. At some point this year, all production will shift to the United States, and then the ones worth owning will very likely be found entirely on the used market.

Couple parts and some polishing and that CZ will be a new pistol. I would recommmend:

A CGW sear
A new hammer, CGW, CZ Comp, or Stock TS hammer.
Remove that firing pin block, if it's a range gun its a must, also requires a spacer.
A good SAO trigger with pre and post travel adjustments.
Reduced power trigger spring or bend the old one.
Trigger job.

You do all that and the SA will be so good it will make your head spin. I currently still own 3 cz's pistol but the old Pre B 75 I redid to SAO had the best trigger i've ever felt, better the my Dan Wesson 1911 at half the cost.
