I went to a gun store today for small pistol primers.

They had Winchester & Federal for $34.99/k
I said "no thanks"

I'm going to Cabela's tomorrow where they have CCI 500s for $31.99/k

2-3 months ago it would've been INSANE to turn down the Win & Fed primers.

Things are lookin up folks.

Small primers seem easier to find than large but things are getting better as time goes on.

I was angry when I had to pay over $20/K back in 2005/2006. When the shortages hit I stopped buying any primers. These days if they hit $30 they stay on the shelf, at least for me. I refuse to pay more than $29.99 and that's firm. I truly would rather not load than pay more than I feel primers are worth.

NO, I'm not saying anyone else is wrong for paying anything they choose to pay. I'm only speaking for myself... The same goes for ammo, especially .22LR ammo. If i feel the price it too high I won't buy, no matter what!

Now that some primers are available for inflated prices powder has again became scarce and seems impossible to find on-line. Not good times yet and prices are outrageous.

No problems here. When I need components I can always and easily find them locally, and the prices have remained very close to pre panic prices. Selection has also been excellent too.

Got a new m1a as a wedding gift and saw I was low on 4064 and lrp's, called my buddy at the lgs two weeks ago and my wife came home that day with 2lbs of powder and 2k primers...definitely looking up as far as supply goes. But I was shown the list of products Hornady has discontinued until they're caught up and it's extensive...just wish I could find 50gr v-max's at the lgs or midway!

Yeah even Gunbot.net has primers listed 2-3 cents each!

Things are getting better, and now is the time to stock up on reloading
stuff so your not affected next time!!

be safe.

And there WILL be a next time. I have my doubts that we'll fully recover from this drought before the next, worse one hits.

I just scored 8 lbs of Varget within an hour's drive today. The shop had 4 kegs in stock, and said things are definitely improving. The price was LESS than before the shortage!

Ya, powder OTOH is still made of unobtainium.

I can get Accurate #5 which is good.
But I can't find any Universal.

I did find a pound of Varget, & Tite Group, but the Tite Group was $23/lb. :scrutiny:
Six - eight months ago I was paying $17.

But all in all, I'm still happy about the primer situation! :D

Cabelas in MN had all Remington, CCI and Winchester primers in stock. Small rifle, small pistol and both flavors of large primers. they also had magnum primers in stock. the shelves were full. they also had many Federal primers as well. Powder supply looked pretty good but I was not in need of any so I did not look that close

About three weeks ago I stopped in at a Cabela's on my way to the dentist and found the guy stocking powder on the shelves just as I was about to leave- snagged two pounds of Benchmark which I've never used but supposedly produces top velocities in the .405 Winchester cartridge.

Primers are coming back as well which is a good thing. Now if .22LR can only be had at a reasonable cost... shoot, I can load smoking hot .357 Magnum rounds cheaper than what I can get .22 for!!!

I agree, the situation is improving for the most part.

How come my Left Coast Cabela's has a powder selection about as scarce as hen's teeth? One would think a chain store has equal buying/stocking. Could be a local run on whenever it does come in, but early or late in the day it doesn't seem to matter; it's just hardly there.

Well, just remember that prices change. I remember paying $0.79/gallon for diesel back in 1998-1999. If I refused to buy "overpriced" fuel...

:)

Started loading my own a few years ago, and learned very quickly, especially around election time/panic time--don't get caught without supplies!

It's been a challenge trying to locate bullets, primers, powder this past year, but I was able to find some at decent prices, espeically thanks to the good people like bds on this very forum. I have also tried different combinations of components (with great results!) for which I would have not normally put together.

I have pretty much given up on commercial ammo, except for carry/defense ammo, which I shoot from my carry weapons just to be sure that they all feed and function as expected. Previously, practice ammo was cheap enough for me not to have to load my own, and served as a great source of brass on which I now rely on at the range and at matches. Unless the pricing goes back to pre-panic levels (especially .22LR) I will continue making my own, and will focus my time on getting a good deal on components instead of trying to get a "deal" on commercial practice ammo.

It seems that things are looking up as far as ammo/reloading supplies availability.

A dealer at a gun show this weekend had quite a few boxes of CCI and Winchester primers for $34/1000. I haven't seen any primers for under $75/1000 at a gun show in nearly two years.
