I just bought an older 220 like 1blindref shows above, and was wondering if the older 220s are any better or worse than the newer ones. And if so, please tell why. Thanks!

There is alot of debate over which are better, the old stamped slide P220 vs the new milled slide P220.

IMHO, they both have their strong points.

The stamped slide P220s balance better and are not as top heavy. They also don't have the extractor issues that some not all ;) of the new milled slide P220s have.

The milled slide P220 slides are stronger and they now all come with a rail. There are some that hate the rail, but thats a whole other debate :p .
It true that some of the milled slide P220s have extractor issues. Sig is now making the new P220s with external extractors. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

I've now got three of each and I can say that I like them all.

I will admit that I like the classic looks of the older Sigs better, but I also like the way the heavier milled slide soaks up the recoil of the .45acp round.

Good luck with your new older P220.

How do you know if you have a stamped slide Sig?
The easiest way is to look at the roll pin near the back of the slide directly above the decocker lever.

The older stamped slide Sigs used a two piece hollow roll pin.

The newer milled slide Sigs use a solid roll pin.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those 220 's, 226's , 239's et al. not SIG-SAUERS ?

Mine is a SIG P-210/6, pure Swiss SIG, pure delight.

I'm not sure what you are asking.
If they aren't SIG-SAUERS, what are they???

The original 210 pistols were made by SIG.

When they made the foray into making the 220, then the 225... 226.. et al..

They partnered with Sauer. One of the two was more of a manufacturer, the other an importer.

Hence... Sig Sauer.

The pistols and rifles are a joint venture. Although I think Sauer still makes their own hunting rifles.

My P250

Just picked this P250 40 S&W up on Tuesday. I'm new to the club.

Welcome to the Club, bakerzduzin :)

Blindref, i'm jealous everytime I see your Stainless Sigs!
Thanks for the compliment!

I was at my range today and shot the P226 .22 conversion kit on someone elses gun. He'd just bought it and was shooting it for the first time.
It shot 100% of the rounds that we put through it (which I thought was good for a .22 the first time out). One of the guys that works at the range said he could get me one for $285.
I'm not sure if its worth getting. I've got a couple of .22s that I like shooting a lot. I think I'd rather spend that $285 on ammo.

Anyone here get one yet?
If so, how do you like it?

Can I ask you Sig fans a question? For my first pistol, and to be used for both concealed and open carry, would y'all recommend a 220 Carry Equinox? I really love the look of the balance between stainless and matte. (First post. Umm, hi!)

EDIT: I should probably say this now, I am very familiar with handguns, handgun usage, and general firearm safety. I have sent several thousand rounds through family members' and rental handguns.

The 220 in any form is a great pistol and you'll have no troubles with it as a carry gun.

Just find a good belt and holster and you'll be set.

i'm so confused at times...does the "Carry" have the shorter slide?

if it does, be sure you test it extensively before carrying it. the shorter slide's increased velocity tends to accentuate the extraction/ejection problems of some stainless slide 220s

Yes, the P220 "Carry" has a shorter slide while retaining the full-length grip. I've never heard of a shortened slide causing problems with extraction on Sigs. In fact, I've never heard of Sigs having extraction problems.

I have both older P220's with the stamped slides, and a P220 Carry with the stainless slide, that I picked up when they first came out. I've been told by a number of people I should be having extractor issues with my Carry, but I never have, its been as flawless, and shoots just as well as my older guns.

Check on sigforum.com, a lot of people have been having issues with 220's made in the last few years. Many more problems with 220's, 220 Carry's and 220ST's than all the other Sig models. People were having problems with the last round of a magazine. Worsening the issue, many people said that even after a trip or two back to Sig, they would still have issues. Having said that, I'm sure most of them ran fine. It did cause me to get a 226 earlier this year instead of a 220, however. And Sig has recently changed all the 220's to have a 226 style external extractor, so that must tell you something. I now have a new 220ST with external extractor on the way, I'll tell you guys how it does at the range.

when Sig changed the 220 over to a milled slide, the extractor was not located optimally. when combined with normal production tolerences, it would somtimes lead to extraction problems.

if you send your gun into Sig, they will fix the problem. that isn't the solution, but the problem isn't widespread enough to justify a recall...as demonstrated by the many 220 models with stainless slides that are working fine. there is an aftermarket solution in the works for folks who want the problem properly corrected

I don't know if the milled slide P220 internal extractor problem is in fact as big of a problem as its made out to be. I'd like to know what percentage of P220s made are problem guns. I'm sure Sig would never let those numbers be known ;)

I've got three P220s with that set up (two Carrys and one ST) and have yet to have 1 single extraction or feed problem with any of them. Thats somewhere around 1500-2000 rounds through them (mostly two of the three).

Maybe I just got lucky? (three times  )

I know that there are those here, and some on the Sig forum that have had problems with theirs.
There have been quite a few threads posted about them. There also have been many posts of those who haven't had problems - so I guess its just luck of the draw. As far as I've read, Sig has fix most if not all of the problem guns.
Grayguns is also another option, but you have to pay for that.

I am glad Sig has gone to an external extractor design to hopefully reticfy the situaution.

i have 2 220ST and haven't had a problem with either either, but you can easily see how marginal the extractor purchase is by looking at the overlap of the extractor hook and the casehead impression on the breachface

I'll add a crappy photo of my new P220 Combat TB to the club:

p220_combat_tb.jpg

This is on my desk (which looks a heck of a lot dustier than I thought it was) after my first outing at the range, right before cleaning. Went through 450 rounds, not a single misfire, FTE, whatnot. My best group was perhaps an inch and a half at 30 feet. The group from my first mag was, ah, "a little larger than that". :) I really started liking that extra bit of mag hanging down there after a while, and in general I really like the pistol quite a lot. Feels good in my hand, and all the bits are intuitively easy to get at and such. I may pick up a set of Hogues for it, as I'm seemingly addicted to them (I have large hands, so maybe they help fill out a smaller grip like the 220). They'll spoil the FDE look to the thing, though, so I'm not sure.

I bought all the spare mags they had, including a spare 8 rounder. The thread protector I got from TGS. Didn't notice much difference with it on or off. A laser/light combo is on order and in the mail somewhere. (Hasn't even arrived yet and my brother is giving me grief that the green lasers are "cooler".) I got some good holster advice from the folks here, and will pick up a holster once the light arrives. I also bought a Gemtech Blackside suppressor along with it.

I've read conflicting reports about the Blackside's lack of a booster and how it affects the cycling and ejecting and so forth. Near as I can figure the "Blacksides suck" vs. the "Blackside worked fine on my gun" tally is running about even, with the P220s seeming to get along fairly well with that suppressor. Which gives me a little hope it'll work out well on my gun. I didn't want to have a huge, heavy can sticking off the end, and the Blackside seemed like just the thing according to my research -- it really is pretty light. Not the quietest from what I understand, but if it just dials it down a notch or three I'll be fine. I reckon I'll use hotter loads and a strong grip and hope it wasn't a bad purchase. I'll post here again in a few months when it arrives if anyone is interested.

Anyway, glad to see there are a lot of Sig owners here on THR!

brhodes-
Welcome to THR and the the Club :)
I like that Combat. I haven't seen many pictures of them here yet.
Make sure you post a couple of pics when you get it all accessorized, I'm looking forward to seeing them
Good luck with it!
