I have the opportunity to buy a very cheap near new octagonal Henry 22lr or a little more costly older Marlin 39a in fine condition. I want to have either threaded and somehow altered to allow feeding of the magazine tube. Any recommendations? Below is the main picture I have to go on and it is a Marlin. If it was me? I'd go for the 39a. No offense to the Henry, but the 39a is going to have a greater collector value down the road, as they aren't being made any more...

And then I'd buy a Henry & have that one threaded for a can, since the threading isn't going to affect it's value down the road [may in fact add to it!] ;)

^^^^ this.

Additionally, I don't know how Marlin's microgroove barrel will do suppressed. I have a nicer, older, but with the crossbolt safety 39A, no way I'd thread it. That rifle is what it is and will remain so.

Hmm. That is a good point. I could buy the Marlin then buy a super cheap basic Henry. That is something to consider. The only thing is that I am so used to shooting 22, 45 and 5.56 suppressed. I shoot 9mm suppressed too but mostly not. It is hard to consider going backwards on shooting quiet. I may consider that though.

Thanks. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1424237613.738592.jpg

I would just cut the mag tube down a half inch and use what ever can I liked. The gun would look nice and you would only loose a round of capacity, maybe.

1) Remove the outer mag tube, by drifting out the retaining pin and/or removing retaining screw, cut an appropriate amount off.
2) Re-cut the "J" slot in it.
3) Remove cap, of the inner tube, by drifting the retaining pin, cut an appropriate amount off.
4) Re-drill retaining pin hole, re-assemble after polishing and cold bluing steel parts.

I agree that shortening the tube would look a lot nicer than that slightly-bent-tube thing going on in that picture. That's awful. I shortened a magazine tube on an H&R Pardner pump when I SBS'd it. It wasn't that hard.

In my case, I cut out a middle section of the tube and welded it back together, because I couldn't rethread the end of the tube, which is how the cap stays on. In your case, re-cutting the J-slot is probably a lot easier. Just go slow and take it easy, and it should be fine.

Collectors tend to like things original. Any modification you make will reduce the value to any potential collector.

That would work if you wanted to remove the suppressor every time you want to load the tube. If it is straight and there is a can on the end of the barrel you would have to cut it so short (in half) so when you pulled the cap/spring feed tube out to the point it contacts the suppressor you can add bullets.

I don't know if anyone made a .22 rimfire lever action that has the tube magazine in the stock like the Browning .22 semiauto but the Spencer rifle (back when lever guns were invented) fed from a magazine in the stock. Or a rotary mag like the Savage 99 or Ruger 96/22, would solve the problem.

Oh, I suppose this is for plinking at the range and not hunting. My short Henry holds 13rds, I haven't shot 13 rabbits, on one trip, in a long time.

I have no idea, just pointing that out.

I looked at the photos and was pleasantly surprised to see a neat small diameter "can" that would allow regular .22 front load tube magazine feed.

I own a Marlin 39 Mountie but if I considered a quieter gun I would buy a Henry (the Henry receiver may be alloy but the barrel is steel and should take a thread for a silencer -to use the Form 4 term. (Marlins proofmarked (JM) are becoming holy relics you know.)

Why not use a 1/2-28 to 1/2-28 thread adapter to get a little extra length?

This one is probably as slim as your barrel. It is usually used to adapt .700" long "rifle threads" to the shorter threaded section many .22 silencers use. It also gives a good seal to the inner O-ring in the SilencerCo Sparrow which keeps gas off the threads:

I got one from Sportsmans Depot last April for $25.

Thanks for the input. I ended up getting a 39M Golden. I had considered not threading it but I really am used to shooting suppressed now. In 4 months I will have a second 22 lr suppressor-Spectre 2 and will always wish to use them. I like the idea of the adapter so I can just get the threading don regular but be able to properly seat the Silencerco if I choose to use that one. I don't mind cutting the tube but I agree that it may not allow the loading of the magazine. It is likely we will have to angle the tube and cut it back a bit.

This rifle will be used for fun and varmint control. I already have 10/22, Savage Mk2 and 22 lr conversion for my BCM AR15.

A suppressor capable lever .22 has been high on my list for a long time. Once you get yours done I'd be really interested in hearing how you got around blocking the loading tube, who you had do the work, and about how much it ran you to get the rifle all set up. I honestly don't know where I would go about getting that kind of work done.... Some of the gunsmiths I've gone to have had trouble just threading barrels correctly.

Well, if I was in your boat I would wind up using my Checkmate on that rifle.

It is a tri lug QD can with a slim mount. At least 1/3 turn is a LOT faster than removing a can from 5/8" of 1/2-28 threads.

Mount on the end of a 10/22 barrel.

Has a polymer front sight that holds the mag tube, working a metal band soon

I hope you get your Henry working. I don't have a checkmate. I have innovative arms Apex and a Spectre 2 coming in the spring.
