Silly CCI primer issue

Since I wet tumble, the first thing I do with my brass is to decap it and wash it before size or any other processes.

Lately I've been getting frustrated with some brass being stubborn about dropping the primer out. After a bunch of cussing, and lots of taking the shell holder out to see a primer partially set back in the cartridge.

I finally figured out what is happening: the anvil forms around the decap pin, and gets drawn back into the pocket on the upstroke. It seems that CCI primers are the culprit, the Winchester, Federal and Remington don't stick. Decap die is the RCBS universal for 22-45, uses the headed decap pins. I've had this issue with 9mm, 223, and 40.

Now that I figured out the issue, how do I fix it?

Anyone else ever have this issue?

You'll need to slightly round the tip of the decapping pin and then polish it. That will keep the anvil from grabbing onto the pin and being pulled back up into the pocket as it's withdrawn.

Hope this helps.

ETA: ReloaderFred beat me to the post. :D

Since bottom of primer anvils have different shapes (see comparison pictures below), you could try slightly rounding/polishing the bottom of the pin.

I was thinking the RCBS Universal deprimer had a spring loaded pin. If this is the case replace the spring so it will pop it loose once clear. The springs tend to take a set and quit working after a while. A call to RCBS CS will get you a free replacement part.

Oh I've had many headaches with CCI (small pistol) and RCBS. I've tried modifying the decapping pin, and while that helped, it did not solve my issue. Out of sheer curiosity and because it was cheap, I bought a lee decapping die. I've to date never had a hung up CCI primer hang up using the Lee die. The CCI vs Lee decapping pins are different profiles.

Besides the excellent suggestions posted so far, i also adjust the decapping pin stick out a little. Sometimes up or sometimes down will do it.

It seems to help dislodge the primer from the pin a bit better instead of getting the primer partially stuck in the pocket.

I had that trouble and when I looked at the decap pin it had burrs on it. I replaced the decap pin and that solved the problem.

Dillon dies do have a spring in them that flings the spent primer off.

That said I have modified the decamping pin on regular dies to prevent pull back too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will fiddle around with it this weekend.

I have tried pushing primers out gently and also see if I can pop them out fast, the darn thing just hangs on to the pin either way.

I wonder if that Pow-R-Punch rod will fit in one of my decap dies, the spring loaded feature may be a winner.

I'll look at polishing the pin as well, that may be a simple solution.

It is good to know I'm not the only one to have had this issue come up.

The RCBS universal is not spring-loaded, just slightly loose. I have had no issues with CCI or any primers. Polishing your pin may help. The decap assy shown above is not for use with the universal decap die.

Dillon does use spring-loaded pins to prevent pullback of the primers.

My Universal deprimer is spring loaded. If the pin moved in and out the spring is collapsed if the color is tight.

Wholly Cow!

I am having the same problem and was wondering what the heck was happening.

Simply figured my decapping pin wasnt set far enough down, but now that I read this. . . .

Knowing I use CCI primers, geez it all makes sense!

Thanks!

It is really easy to shape your pin to not stick in the spent primer. You don't even have to take the pin out.

Just take sandpaper and break the sharp edge of the pin.

If you want to get fancy, you can chuck the pin up in a drill and spin it cupped into a piece of sandpaper

The spring-loaded RCBS Pwr Punch decapping rod is sold separately. To my knowledge no RCBS die sets come with it.

True the die sets don't come with it. My 22-25 cal RCBS universal decapper is not the spring loaded, the 27-45cal decapper came with a spring loaded decaper, its longer than the one designed to replace the decap pin in the die sets.
