As I age, I find myself excited about single shot rifles. I have decided to build one simply for the satisfaction.

I have purchased a 20" barrel from a Remington 700 . It is brand spankin' new, and for 55 bucks I could not say no.

I have been looking at a few different ideas for an action. Bolt is always my first choice. I just like it. I have also entertained break open like the 30 30 I had when I was a kid. Recently, I was admiring the RN-50, which is a .50 BMG single shot that uses a break open design, but the breech plug unscrews to reveal the chamber. I have been told that it is very accurate. It is made by Serbu Firearms.

Any thoughts?

I like my break open Cva, it has the extractor instead of ejector and makes things very nice when dealing with pressure issues, this rifle is sub moa capable easily and while you do manually remove the spent cartridges, I never worry about it freezing or binding up.

I dont mind removing the cartridges. My mind is on the shot, and there is only one. Hunting in Germany in the 80's taught me all about accuracy. If you miss or wound an animal, you might never go with that guide again.

I will check out the schematics of the CVA. Thanks!

If compactness is a consideration (and it seems like it might be with a 20" barrel), a falling block action makes it shorter overall than a bolt. You might want to check out a High Wall design.
Welcome to the forum.

Single Shot .243win for me would beg for a Rem XP100.
I hear it begging too.....build me....buuiiillldddddd meeeeee.......

I really like the looks of both the CVAs, and T&Cs (I own a contender) and the Ruger number 1s and other falling blocks. I also really want to get one in the nearish future (yeah, that maybe a while). I think these would all make great hunting arms.

For some reason the idea of a short single shot bolt gun really appeals to me also. I would, if considering a .243, probably go with what Varminterror suggested, or possibly a savage target action.

my ruger rsi 3006 is my second favorite single shot and the browning low wall .260 is my favorite single shot. eastbank.

About as short as can be (without going NFA). Super 16 (16.25"). Actually, would have kept it if it was 18.5".
IMHO it was too short (looks). Shot great, popped 2 deer with 2 shots. Guess that's good enough LOL
Have no desire to build a .243 win on an Encore, have a shorty like this.
20", with no real action length.......is annoying enough.

Ive seen you post that picture before, thats a really compact little rig. I was considering having a smith tack on a 2.5" extension to my 7-30 super14 so i could put a stock on it. But after reading your comments about it being TOO short, i think ill go with a 20" tube.

Which does bring up a good point about action length. If op choses a break open or falling block total gun length can be a couple inches shorter, or the barrel a couple inches longer, which is what id go with on a 243. This is in comparison to a bolt gun (which id still probably go with LOL).
