Got my first deer Jan. 11th with a single round from a .44 mag carbine. It whistled right through the chest, took out both lungs. I don't think it even slowed down. Even though this was a large mulie doe, I was surprised at how small and frail deer really are structurally. Not even as stout as most humans.
What really surprised me was the "WHAP" of the bullet striking the animal, I wasn't expecting to hear that. Two other does were taken within minutes of mine, and I heard those bullets hit too. Those shooters were using a suppressed .300 blk, so the impact was very distinct.
