I'm finally finished with my SKS to M1A conversion, and so I'd like to share my little project with you all.

I always loved the M1A rifle, but I can't afford one, nor can I afford to shoot one, so I came up with this idea about 6 months ago, and it's finally finished.

I started with a bone-stock Yugo SKS that I bought for 150 bucks.

I then added:
1. ATI monte Carlo stock (fits better)
2. John Masen 10 round magazine (breaking in now, but looks promising)
3. Rock mount folding bi-pod (works amazingly well)
4. TS200 tech sights (I had them adjusted after firing just ONE test grouping!)
5. I did a hack job on the bayo lug, grenade sight, and front sight hood and bent the sides to form the M1A ears. Also, a freak accident with the cutting tool led my front sight to be chopped in half vertically, so I don't have to spring for the thinner front post, and because the SKS front sight rotates, I can go back to the old sight profile by turning it 90 degrees.

This cost me a grand total of about 350 dollars (take THAT mini-30!) and it is my favorite gun now.

And for the purists:

Very cool, but...if it costs a grand, why not just go with the M1A? It's just an SKS with different sights right?

:scrutiny:

He said it cost a grand total of 350 U$.

That is, "grand" is an adjective modifying the noun total, which is the direct object of the verb "cost" which pertains to the indirect object "me". The relevant information about cost is contained in the preposition clause "of about 350 dollars."

Are we clear?

Nice work there looks like allot of time and thought went into your creation.
If it were mine the only thing I might add would be a scout scope mount and a 1-4X EER Burris pistol scope with QD mounts or C more sight.
Great to see your rifle thanks for the posting.:)

Is it 922r compliant, now you've Dremel'ed off it's C&R status?

And you've built more or less (no mag change for me, too much work) what I want to do as a project gun, although I was probably going to take the grenade launcher off too and replace with a US made muzzle brake and put some Firesights up front for my ailing eyes. :)

Nice job!

Holy crap! That is so frealing sweet!!! If you want to do a step by step write ( hint hint we'd all love one) and need a place to host pictures or the entire thing just PM me. Looks like I have to go get 2 sks's at the next show. one for collection and the other for fun.

The ATI stock fits better than the wood stock because it is longer. Sorry if I didn't specify.

The magazine is a detachable 10 rounder, and I had some functioning problems in the beginning, literallly 5 seconds with some pliars removerd the burr that was causing the trouble. I'm still breaking it in anyway, i've only got 40 rounds through it.

With the ATI stock on it is compliant, the wood stock makes it out of spec. I will probably replace the greande launcher with a muzzle brake at some point, but I may try to weld an M-14 flash hider on it.

It certainly isn't too late to slap on a scout scope, but for now I like my irons.

I'll be taking it to the range today. I also took it yesterday for an initial sight-in, but it still had the bayo lug then, and I had not yet modified the front sight hood.

Looks pretty nice, but why a ten round mag?

Why not a twenty round mag from Tapco if you wanted a different mag?

They work well and it gives you 10 more rounds than the mag you've got without extending it down to the point where you'd be too high if you shot off of a bench or went prone the way you would with a thirty round mag. IMO, it's a nice in between. Do you just not like them for some reason?

I like it! How sturdy it the ATI? Some of the other stocks they make seem a little flimsy. My MN stock feels good but the fore end has some play in it. I need to get a better stock for my SKS because I am about to turn it into a deer rifle.

The M1A uses a straight 20 round box mag. The john masen mag looks more like the M1A magazine than the Tapco one, that's why I bought it.

Oh, and the ATI stock is pretty good, I'm very happy with it. I had to grind down some of it just behind the reciever so that the aperature sights would fit, and I had to install the sling stud for the bi-pod to clamp on to.

Looks nice.

Is the John Masen magazine a single stack? It's awful long in comparison to the stock SKS fixed magazine.

Well Rugerdude, you went and did it, forcing this gun noob to give in to his tinkering urges.

I already posted my search for a donor gun so I can create something similar to yours (but with a little less of the M1A flavour).

Damn your inspirational works! :)

Motivation indeed!

I think that would make a great AQT trainer for the M1A, while allowing the cheaper ammo, while still putting 30 cal holes in the targets and easily seen at the AQT distance.

Bravo!

who cares if it shoots like crap (i hope it doesnt), that looks freaking awesome!

and i'm sure you had tons of fun putting it together.

looks MUICH better than the tapco t6 skses IMHO.
