just got a norinco sks with composite stock thru gunbroker. expected it to be like my ak, but there isn't clearance to "click" 30 round magazines in place- bolt in the way. they have the extended front arm; they are not ak mags. the 5 round mags don't fit at all- not enough clearance at the trigger group end. mags 30 round mags fit if bolt held open manually but bolt wont stay open. Unsure if I can even fire this gun . am I missing something here?

I bought an SKS hoping to put 30 rounders in it, but the conversion kits all truly do suck. There are the chinese SKS's that take AK mags, but they are pricey. I'd sell it and be happy with the AK if I was you.

+1 on the stock ten-rounder. I do have an old 30 round USA Magazines unit that works perfectly (including holding the bolt open after the last round is fired), but that is somewhat unusual, and it needed some fiddling with the feed lips to get it that way. And eventually the plastic follower will wear down and it'll stop holding the bolt open.

Do you have the stock ten round fixed magazine? Stock ten rounder + a zillion rounds on stripper clips = faster reloading and better reliability.

I never considered getting a 30 rounder. It is too easy to carry a small pouch with a couple hundred rounds on strippers. I don't want to risk introducing reliability problems. It is a good rifle anyway.

I asked about this a while ago on ar15.com. Back in the mid 90's me and a friend went in on an sks at a gun show. $69. We also picked up an ak mag conversion kit for $29-$39. Cheap. Then bought 3 ak mags, and a 660 round sardine can of 7.62x39 russian stuff. The conversion took less time than it took to get into that ammo can. Talk about a blast. Carters Country hated us that weekend.

Anyway, I was wondering what ever happened to those conversion kits. I saw a converted sks at the Pasadena Hi Power gund show about a month ago going for a fortune.

If you want to use an SKS to hunt deer, in some states that requires a magazine capacity not to exceed 5 rounds. I converted from a fixed 10 round mag to a fixed 5 round mag, just for this reason.

Some people like to blast ammo down range as quickly as possible; for that purpose having detachable high capacity magazines is useful. For hunting wild game, the need to meet hunting regulations, and precisely place the bullet into the target becomes more important; having a low capacity fixed magazine is more useful as it allows resting the rifle on a support, to improve shot placement. The effective range of the SKS round on deer is about 125 yards, and that is about the limit of accuracy with some rifles (they can't keep the bullets in the kill zone past that range). I know that SKS rifles have been used to kill deer; one of my friends did it with a rifle he got from me.

I had some difficulty getting the replacement mag to fully seat when i did my conversion, and it was supposed to be a true drop in replacement. I suspect that removable magazines have a more difficult fitting process; it may be that each converson is peculiar to a specific rifle, and can not be used on a different rifle without refitting to that gun. Hopefully the mag is being modified, and the gun is not.
