I was shooting my Yugo SKS today at the range.

After about 10 shots, I looked down and found the piece pictured here on the shooting bench. I stripped down the SKS and could not find where this piece of metal came from. It may have been on the bench before I set up.

Of course I stopped shooting the SKS. Needless to say, my range trip sucked as I brought only my HD shotgun and my SKS (w. 250 rounds). 50 rounds of 00 Buck through an 18" barrel got old real fast.

It looks a lot like part of the trigger assembly, but after taking mine apart real quick, I'd say maybe not.

Is your trigger assembly still in one piece and functional?

Have you ever taken the assembly out? It's real easy; Take the bolt out, flip the gun upside down and you'll see a little notch right behind the trigger guard. Depress that little bump with a small screwdriver until you hear it click and then the whole assembly should lift out.

I think that piece you found belongs to somebody else though a few more opinions sure would help.

I have a Russian, and an Albenian. None of them has a part which resamble the part that you shown.

Can't find anything like that in my Chinese SKS.

IMO, it's probably from something else.

Did you try firing it after you noticed it on the bench? I ask because it looks like the striker (?) for the firing pin (the hammer part that is released to spring upward to hit the back of the firing pin shoving it into the primer). If you take your trigger group out it should be in the rear half sticking out of the top at a roughly 45 degree angle (when cocked). If that is what it is then you will probably need a new trigger group for the rifle (my guess anyway).

(edit - #51 in the exploded drawing)

The only part of my SKS that's ever come out is a pin in the trigger assembly. But that was a pin and not a piece like what you are describing.

Are you sure that piece wasn't laying there before you sat down. I've detail stripped a couple of my Yugos and never saw a piece like that before.

That little thing looks much to dainty to be a part of an SKS. It must be off one of them there Remchesters. :neener:

I dont see anything like that in mine either.. I would look it over again then head to the range and load 1 round into it to see if it shoots ok

Now I think it probably was there when I sat down.

But if you look at the picture (the bottom image), it looks as if got sheared off where a pin or bolt previously was. So I was more worried that is was a piece of a part and not a complete part.

But looking at the diagram, it does not appear to be a part of a part or a part of a part of a part. :)

GregL, the trigger assy looks good.

Bill Hook, the bolt is cool also.

Well, I guess I cut my firing session short for no reason

But it is better safe than sorry.

Thanks for all the help, folks.

BTW, I hope the gun (if it was a gun) that it came out of isn't shot in the lane next to me in the near future. :what:

That part looks familiar for some reason, but it's definately not an SKS part I've ever seen. I've torn down my Norinco SKS completely a few times and there's nothing like that in there.

I've GOT IT!

It's the Recoil Plate! Well, maybe. Look right above the "11" on the parts diagram. See that square hole? That's where a hardened 'recoil plate' has been inserted into the receiver where the rear of the bolt tips down. This is not a part that can be missing from the gun and allow you to safely fire it. It's not on the parts breakdown because you ain't supposed to break it down!

My suggestion? Take it to a competent gunsmith and have him weld or pin it back in place. Then have them check it for headspace. Good luck. Gunsmith for sure though.

of course... I could be wrong. :uhoh:

Phew, that's a relief. I'd hate to think you'd have fired it without that very important piece. Is it possible it's a piece of your fixed magazine? I seem to recall that there is a similar looking part somewhere in the magazine assembly. Without the gun in front of me, that's about all I can help you with.

A note: to take the trigger mech out the safety has to be on, all the way forward and up...you dont have to take the bolt out of it either.
