If this has come up before (quite likely . . .) I apologize. I tried a quick search, but may have overlooked something.

I have an SKS "Cowboy's Companion" carbine, purchased several years ago, that has a small rail mounted on the left side of the receiver. Someone once told me it was for use in conjunction with some type of scope mount, but I can't find any additional details.

Anyone know what type of mount, where I might find one, etc.?

Thanks in advance!:D

Haven't seen one but here's my guess. Sounds like a typical side rail for mounting an AK-type scope arrangement. I think the folks that make Saigas (eaacorp.com? I think) and Robinson Arms (the folks that make VEPR's) sell the scope mount itself. I'm sure there are others. Do a search for AK scope mounts and I think you'll see that mount you're looking for.

in my most humble opinion.......

the SKS is better off with the issue iron sights. I have seen them fitted successfully with optics though....and if you must, I'd recommend a dot sight over a telescopic one. I hear a lot of mumbling and grumbling over the standard sights on the SKS, but to tell you the truth, they actually remind me a lot of the issue sights on an '03 springfield. Perhaps better suited to the target range than a combat zone. Too bad the SKS lacks the fine accuracy of the springfield.

Railroader: Nice looking rifle and mount. Am I correct in assuming that you can't put an AK scope mount on that SKS rail?

Murphster, I really couldn't tell you about if an AK scope mount would work on that rail. I bought this rifle new set up like this. Also I live in california so I can't remember the last time I saw an AK. Mark

Thanks!

Riphalman, Railroader and Murphster; appreciate the info & input. It looks like I may be out of luck trying to find one of the original mounts, at least through normal channels (I don't do e-bay).

I did find a Millett website (www.millettsights.com) that lists a "scout-type" mount for the SKS (they have models for AKs, too) that replaces the rear sight blade. Millett is a reputable company, so I plan to give this a try. A scout setup with a low-power handgun scope should be ideal for a stubby SKS.:D

The biggest beef I have heard with the Scout mount on an SKS is that the scope and/or mount must be removed to clean the gas system.
