SKS: The Poor Man's EBR PTII

I haven't gotten around to the bolt mod yet. I got the (now discontinued) Tapco bolt, but never got around to fitting it, the fact that Tapco pulled it because they really couldn't make it work says I sould probably have the bolt I have that works modified.

tahunua001: Nice rifle. Will that aftermarket magazine feed well?
I don't know yet I haven't gotten it, it's still on back order.

When the gun bug First bit me in '07 I was 52 years old.
it hit me when I was 20 back in 09. yep, thats right, I'm a young'un.

Even for people who are not so poor (and have a Garand and six Enfields etc for fun), the basic SKS is an enjoyable, effective gun and being 5'11", the ergos are helped by a low cost, slip-on 1" recoil pad. The basic rifle always costs less than any AR, AK clone, VZ-58 etc.
at this point I am pretty much the epitome of poor, luckily while I still had the illusion of having money I acquired enough of a collection to be fairly satisfied at this point. I own 2 AR15s, one 5.56 and the other 9mm. I used to own an AK but sold it. in my personal opinion, ans that's all this is, the AR15 as far superior to the SKS and AK47, regardless of what you slap on it. I don't need flashlights, lazers, barometers, Geiger counters, ranger finders and vertical pistol grips but the modular nature of the AR makes any kind of modification a snap, no grinding, fiddling, fitting, swearing, hammering or filing to make a pistol grip fit. the 5.56 though may not pack the FTLBs at close range that the 7.62x39 does but it's flatter shooting and retains energy longer. also, anything that can be done, be it magazine changes, setting the safety, racking the charging handle etc... can be done with my firing hand firmly in place and without loosing positive control of the muzzle. the AK and SKS can not make that same claim. however the original intent of this project was to see if it was possible to make a passable second place for a reasonably lower price than a $600 AR15 and in this case I believe I have.
I would take this $400 SKS over an $800 WASR any day of the week.

and setting/disengaging the safety without modifying your firing hand's grip?
how bout loading from strippers with your week hand, con you do that without un-shouldering the SKS?

the statements that I made were a generalization between the SKS and AK47, some people can work out tactics that work better for each one but with the AR15 it's almost 2nd nature from the beginning.

Ahem..I'll just leave this here. You should read it before you start taking things off or putting things on..you appear to have assembled yourself a violation.
yes I'm aware that this is not 922R complaint as of this moment however the magazine that I have on backorder will put it within compliance parameters, replacing the trigger and piston would also allow me to put the original mag back in should I choose.
(Which rifle are you referring to as being in violation?)

Ok, if you are referring to the OP's rifle, are Chinese Type 56s imported under C&R status?
any rifle made on or before march 6th 1963(as of today) is eligible to be imported as a C&R as long as it is in original configuration. as my 1959 came from the store, it was 922R exempt as per section 925D. however the second that I changed the configuration, I "assembled a semi automatic rifle from parts, resembling or copying a rifle that is banned under 922R".

it's a huge PITA and makes no sense whatsoever that this rifle is legal as is but replacing a stock, even identical style stock makes it illegal.

I hate 922R with a passion and if I had it my way it would be erased from the books... 922 as a whole isn't a bad rule book to play from but section R is for lack of a better word retarded and I would like it if we could avoid that topic for the rest of this thread.

fyi,

It is not illegal to own a non 922r compliant firearm, it is simply non compliant to make one. Point being, as long as you aren't the one modifying it, it is legal to own. You are good to go unless you video tape yourself doing it or talk about it on the internet there is no way to know who did it. 922r is intended to keep commercial entities from importing non importable firearms.

Personally I don't think anything can beat stripper clips for an SKS. I have a Norinco that works perfectly with duckbill mags but I prefer my Yugo with the stripper clips. They load faster and they are much lighter to carry around with you. Half the weight of carrying extra ammo is in carrying the extra mags themselves. Forget having them loaded. They are heavy without ammo in them.

I can also keep my rifle sitting low on a rest that is also providing me cover. If I need enough ammo that I need to load multiple detachable mags I would rather be able to take better cover. If I need to shoot that much it means multiple bad guys are around and I'd just as soon live through the exchange.

I agree. I have no problem with the stripper clips. To me the large capacity mags get in the way and screw up the balance of the rifle with all the extra weight hanging off the bottom. Just sayin.

You can do what you want man, big fat who cares, but does ammo from stripper clips weigh less than ammo loaded in magazines? My Tapco and pro-mag magazines aren't THAT heavy. I can load 30 rounds in a pro-mag faster than I can load ten from a stripper clip. I'm quite conditioned to carrying and loading from magazines.

I have to agree with deckard on this one, you may save a few ounces but not nearly enough to make a strong decisive argument. also there is the advantage of fewer mag changes, less mag changes, more lead down range and fewer times that you are vulnerable to opposition advances.

tahunua001:

It's a wonderful situation than some of us only really like certain guns.

The more people who dislike, even show contempt (feigned contempt during this panic) for my selection of guns, the better!
More cash is spent on their guns and accessories, limiting demands for other folks' favorites.
If the SKS, M-1 Garand or Enfields somehow became as popular as AR-15s, imagine the huge price increases!

My son is 24 and maybe he will be bitten by "the bug" long before prices go and remain much higher than they recently were in "normal times".
The plan is to acquire enough "extra" ammo and certain guns, just in case.
Those Brit/Euro and UN "arms control" organizations are using tax money to pay many countries to destroy not just any surplus rifles (not just AKs, but Enfields in South Afrika etc) and also burning Lots of ammo.
