Last week I purchased a new XD-40. This is my first polymer framed pistol. I really like this gun and want to make sure I maintain it properly. So far I have been using Remoil on the slide. Is there anything else out there that would work better?

Actually this one is going on 23,000 rnds
only lube used is military LSA here in the heat and dust of Tucson AZ, sorry bout pics they are the inventory pics not really intended for the net etc... this gun is carried daily and spends a large part of its time carried in a plastic holster while blastin through brush etc.. cross the desert via dirt bike, it gets soaked by monsoon rains and filled with AZ sand and dust........ I really like when the glock guys say the original XD finish won't hold up LOL....... this ones holdin up just fine
I just walked out to the range and fired ya a 40 yard test target, just taped a playin card to the center of the 40 yrd steel plate 180 grn laser cast over 4.6 grns of HS6 in speer cases 2 mags with multiple hits to the large ragged hole lower left of joker and lower center were it tore the high hits were first shots fired walked em down for center......... the same gun will kill cofee cans all day long at 100 yards with 165 grn swagged bullets I make myself but the 180s were close at hand so thats what I grabbed only mods to the gun was trigger job by myself long before Canyon creek started doin the same work its set at 3lbs zero over travel with 1/32" take up once the trigger safty is at full depression and its got after market Sig night sights otherwise its totally original

I use BF CLP for general lube and a thin layer of Mobile 1 synthetic grease on the frame rails of all my pistols. They all run reliably.

I have no idea whether this would work any better, but it occurred to me that automotive Polyethylene grease might some how work well.

Name something, I have used it, including the dipstick from my truck, to use the oil or Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Almost any real grease or heavy oil works well for a while. How fast it cooks off is the issue. I've used RiG grease on mine for almost a year now. It's a little messy, but lasts easily 200 rounds in my pistols. I've recently tried Weapon Shield CLP and it seems to do okay.
If it's like the stuff I've put into a headlight motor, it'll lube okay, but will probbly break down with the high temps associated with firearms.

Rare I use grease on rails...
RIG+P, STOS, PlastiLube, Lubriplate, or Lithium
My "use" for grease is hinge pins for shotguns, and screw in choke tubes.

If I remember I'll get a pic of the rails in that XD 40 Tac. there is zero as in no sign of any rail wear at all, I keep a log of number of rounds through it as it was my first Polymere gun and impressed me so much I hadda get the whole set plus a few Taurus milpros and a few Keltec P3ATs everything gets the same lube LSA I figure if its good enough for Browning .50 BMG chambered machine guns under combat its good enough for my stuff and at $5 per quart the price is right, if all ya own is the XD then that quart will last ya many many years....
Unless your xd has some serious issues ya will never see any rail wear even if ya go with no lube as long as the slide and rails are clean, when they Torture tested onea the original 9 mms they ran it for a few thousand rnds totally degreased with no trace of wear thats onea the things that convinced me to try one out.. and that test gun hadn't been cleaned at all other than a bore snake down the tube for I think it was 17K rounds

All of the lubes mentioned are good. I use Shooter's Choice All Weather High Tech grease on the rails of all my autos. Very Sparingly. A little bit goes a long way. Far too many people use way too much lube on guns and it will collect dirt, soot, firing debris and other stuff.

+1 to Tetra Lube grease. I prefer grease for my polymers for some reason. I give a light oil floater on top of the grease also.

I just started using automotive lithium grease. Pump it from the grease gun into a small tube I got from Brownells. That had tetra grease or something like that. So far so good.

+1 on Milspec LSA There is no reason to use anything else.LSA has undergone the most extensive development and testing on the planet and it is the best.

I use a little copper grade anti-seize compound. A little bit dabbed on the rails goes a long way and works beautifully.

anyone ever try mold release... its used to spray into or onto molds to ease the removal of injection plastics . I sprayed some on a q-tip and applied to the groves on the rail,worked swell for me . It`s slick as owl snot .
Breakfree CLP! There is a lot of stuff out there that will do the job but you can't go wrong with the CLP! Have been using it for a while and has performed superbly.

Another CLP user here. I use it on everything from the AKs to the Glocks. ... I really should start buying the stuff by the gallon.
