I have a High Standard 102 Supermatic Trophy, space gun with 8" barrel. How do I remove the slide spring? I can move the spring and follower forward but cannot move the follower in any other direction. It sits in a semi-circular groove, and I cannot remove it from that groove.

All that series of H-S pistols have the same kind of recoil spring setup. They have a plug at the front of the slide held in with a small pin that was driven in from the bottom of the slide (to preserve the finish and shape of the pin). To remove the plug, spring and follower, it is necessary to drive the pin out top to bottom (use a concave drift punch). The plug, spring and follower will then come out. Make sure to capture the plug, as it can go flying when the pin is removed.

Unless it is absolutely necessary, though, I strongly recommend not removing the recoil spring. They seldom need replacement.

more ?'s

I found a video that shows how to remove it. The gun appears to be used little. However, the slide does not latch open with std. velocity ammo. I works occasionally with SK magazine ammo and well with high velocity ammo.

The spring has the first two turns totally collapsed and the third turn half the regular spacing. The slide is worn where it contacts the catch, the catch is worn, and the slide is worn where it contacts the hammer. The hammer, being harder shows a little burnishing but no wear. The slide and frame have the same number. The hammer seems to cock quite hard, but I have not checked the force yet. I have a 102 citation that works fine with std. vel. ammo. I also replaced the magazine spring and tried both magazines, same results.

roll pin drifts

I found a nice set of special "roll pin" drifts on Amazon by Grace. All of the Grace tools I looked at had good reviews. These roll pin drifts have a small nub in the center which keeps the drift centered on the pin. I can see where the concave tip would be best removal, but for insertion I think the nub tip would be better.

The suggestion to alter a standard drift is excellent. However, on a 1/16th tip, I don't know if it is practical. I would use a drill press, and chuck a spherical 1/4" dia burr. The drift will go in an x-y vise. I don't know if I can get the drift centered well enough to get a decent tip. A lathe would be no better because the drift will have too much run out.

Roll pin punches with a center 'nib' simply will not work on a solid dome head pin!!'

Go to a hardware store and buy the smallest finishing nail set you can find.

It already has a cup tip, and costs a dollar two ninety eight!

You will need a standard pin punch to drive it on out after breaking it loose with the tapered nail set.

hollow

The pins on both of my HS's are hollow all the way through. I intend to remove and insert the pin from the bottom to avoid possible damage to the top of the slide. I do have a 1/16th nail set and will use it if necessary.

"I would think the drift would hold the plug in place until the drift was removed, THEN the plug might go flying. Correct?"

Correct. I should learn not to take any verbal shortcuts. Actually sometimes the plug (H-S calls it the driving spring plug) is pretty snug and it is necessary to tap it out from the rear, but sometimes they are loose and can fly when the drift punch is removed. ;)
