OK, we know W296/H110, HS-7/W571 and HS-6/W540 perform better when a magnum primer is used but has anyone heard if W572 benefits from the use of a magnum primer not?

I'm guessing W244 isn't slow enough to require a magnum primer since its similar to W231 which doesn't need them.

Anyone know or read about it? I have not seen anything so far.

Way back when I tried HS-6 for 38 spl, 44 spl and I was not impressed.
Then I came across a post by you suggesting the use of magnum primers for HS-6 which made a great improvement in accuracy and consistency in some cartridges. Thanks for that.
I figure when using ball powders in high volume low pressure cartridges such as 38 spl it maybe worth trying a mag primer, though with W231 I do not feel the need to do so.
I will ad this, one of my favorite warm 44 spl loads with MBC #20 is with WSF using a GM 150, I will soon compare this load with WLP primers.
Sorry to be of no help.

No, we don't. . . sometimes a mag primer helps, in some weather, especially if you're a bit below an optimal charge weight for a hard-to-start powder, or trying to light a large case volume.

I've tried SPM in .357, and found no advantage in accuracy or SD once I got charge weight up off the starting load. Ditto in 45 Colt tank-buster loads; once I got the crimp right and charge weight up, the Mag primer didn't matter.

In your case (high volume/low pressure) you might find an advantage, but I'll bet you need a chrony to demonstrate it.

I should have known better than to think I would get a straight answer here. The 3 powders I listed are hard to ignite slow ball powders and do benefit from the use of a magnum primer. I am asking about W572, not HS-6 or the others. Just once I would like to get a straight answer. :scrutiny:

On an "open" forum, "sorta" answers and thread drift are common. I can't answer as I haven't used any W572 and I usually just use Magnum primers with WC820, I haven't used any W296/H110 in many years.

wish I could help, but have never used that powder.

ignore the chafe. thick skin rules here at thr!

Your OP is confusing. You mention W 244 and then Win 572??
Probably no straight answers as folks have not used the powder with or without mag primers

Sometimes an old mind starts thinkin' before it stops reading. You can often see a small, slightly off topic post and then a snowball effect and after 5 or 6 more they have little to to with the OP...

FWIW. This is what I read; "...but has anyone heard if W572 benefits from the use of a magnum primer not?"

I use HS-6 in my 9mm Major loads with non-magnum primers and have quite low SD's and spreads. I would not put HS-6 in a category of always needing or benefiting from magnum primers... I think it's application-specific.

But Arch will say that mag primers work better with HS6 and he eats the stuff on his cereal.;)

Do a quick test and see if the Mag primers help, then report back. Then you will know. Normally if your shooting in cold temps the mag do work better with ball powders.
