So I cast my first 50 slugs yesterday from my 12 guage lee one oz. mold. All went fine and I am quite pleases with the results I obtained. Now my question I have pertains to load data. I used the 1 ton of feathers is equal to 1 ton of lead. And since I already had proven data for my one oz hnting loads I used it instead of slug data. I found this load to not only be accurate but comfortable as well. If you would please look this over and tell me if you find fault with my data. Thanks

My Slug load
A-A HULL
18 grains RED DOT
Clay BUSTER 1 0z. Wad
(1) Lee cast 12 ga 1 oz slug
Standard 8 point crimp

Not a good thing to do with shotgun loads. I have the same mould, and Lee gives you tested load data. Lead shot, buckshot, and slugs are not the same pressure-wise even if they weigh the same.

Always Follow Published Reloading Data

Safer to follow Lee's data found here >. http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/SM%203529.pdf As USSR has said, you just can't exchange a slug for shot safely.

If you substitute the same weight of buckshot for the same weight of birdshot the buckshot will usually have lower pressure as i recall the reason is the airspace between the larger pellets, but a slug is a single mass and definitely needs a slower powder. The problem with substituting buck for bird shot may just be a less desirable load, but substituting a slug with a fast powder may be dangerous. At the very least contact Alliant and give them your data and allow them to tell you why no such data exists.

Actually for low velocity reduced recoil slugs Alliant told me 18-19 of RD iirc.....

Call Alliant Monday to verify though.......

I know I've used it with good results and accuracy......

Theoretically pellets will produce higher pressures than slugs for an equal weight load due to the side loading you get from pellets while a slug has none.....

It's impossible to find good low recoil slug info so good luck on your search....Both Alliant and Precision were very helpful to me with my slug loads......I do roll crimp and use a Federal wad, otherwise our recipes are very similar......

I dont suggest a new handload do it, but i have made light loads using Unique with the Lee Key drive slug. Accuracy was better using Lee's data.

No, it's the other way around. A shot charge will compress easily, it acts like a fluid. A slug acts/is a solid and won't/can't compress. So the side load force is more with a slug.

The lee key slug has a diameter that causes a tight fit between the slug and the wad. It's tight so a rifled barrel can exert/impart spin to the slug, the tight fit allows this.
