Another vote for the H&R line!
Several models come to mind.
first would be the 4" sportsman, top of the line for H&R, and great revolvers!
Here's a pair of 1980 Sportsman 4" barrels.

A couple more choices.
Model 929 22 lr swing cylinder 2.5"

Model 642, 22 magnum

Many others out there also, this is just a few choices available.
Still reasonably priced, and very well built revolvers for the money!!

tubeshooter...I wouldn't consider a Bearcat to be off topic. They're dandy little kit guns, if they suit your tastes. Used, isn't too expensive, usually.

Thanks, hariph creek. I am hoping to run into a nice used one. They seem to be tough little guns, so I'm not as concerned about function unless it looks rough.

I felt it was off-topic only because it is single action. But it fits the role very well.

I voted in the S&W model 63 class in the poll. I have a 317 and had some binding issues, so I had a steel cylinder put in. Haven't got to shoot it much, but so far so good.

The gun has cost me more coin than I wanted, but the end result is pretty good and fairly unique. I have to take a better picture to show, because the ones I have right now turned out a little dark.

They really ought to offer this as an option to buy. A "317 Deluxe" or something. The extra bit of weight is nice. Still, if I had it to do over I would have just got a 3" model 63.

Hey Tubeshooter -- I'm really looking forward to seeing a photo of that hybrid 317 when you get a chance!

lol - somehow I figured that might happen...

Here is a link to the thread where I posted the pics. It's at the top of page 3.

S&W 317 .22lr ammo issues.

Thanks! good3.gif

That's a really nifty looking piece. I have a 63 and 317, so I'll probably stand pat for now -- but that's a very intriguing modification for when I wind up with too much time on my hands, somewhere down the road... :D

tubeshooter...agreed a 317 with a steel cylinder would be better. I'd bet it balances better, too?

Yeah - balances great and feels good in the hand. Seems to have picked up about 5 ounces, for a total of 17.5 or so. I've been carrying it around in my pocket (with dummy rounds) all week... :D

Great for carrying a lot and shooting a little, I am thinking. I actually picked up some other .22 pistols just to take the load off of this gun. I personally would not recommend this hybrid nor the 317 as sold for a one-and-only and/or very high volume plinker.

Just looked over SP101 .22 at local gun show table. While $499 is not insignificant amount the gun appears to be very well made. Yet another winner for Strum & Ruger Co.

Some very nice pictures you all have. Impressive!

I know the Smith 617 is a great gun, but I like small and handy. Keep those pics coming!

Just to belay any fears of my not shooting the rimfires shown in #22 - they were oddly all clean the day I shot that picture - not a common occurrence. I bought that 651 ANIB in early November, shooting CCI, Remi, & Hornady .22 WMR ammo costing from $12-$15+/box. After the first 300-400 rounds, I found a source for CCI MaxiMag HPs in the $7 range - and slowly built-up some reserves (1,400 CCI rounds!). Still - the 3" 63 is my favorite - mainly because - even with the recent Wally World increase from $16 to $20 550 brick of Fed 36gr HP .22 LRs, it's cost is just over a fourth that of the .22 WMR to shoot. Plus, where 200 rounds through the 651 gets it pretty nasty, it takes nearly a brick of those Feds to get the 3" 63 as nasty. Shoot Stingers, and it will take far fewer, of course - a bit nasty - but fast ammo! Similarly, the Hornady 'Critical Defense' .22 WMR is a bit nastier than MaxiMags - but optimized for short barrels. The beauty of my J-frame rimfires is the SS - they are easier to clean than an alloy frame. Still, a 3" 317K is a nice revolver. I just think that if you plan to shoot it a lot - and you will - just get a SS rimfire. And... buy some ammo. If it isn't fun to shoot, you bought the wrong revolver... trade it towards the right one!

"Which one would I buy next" would be the SP101. <p>Honorable mention to the Smith 351pd, interchangeable in either a pocket or ankle holster.

My oldest so in Glauster Ma. just snagged a Ruger stainless Bearcat customed with J frame(S&W) sights for a song. A super little kit gun.
Jframe, I'd love to own one of those little 317s.

Steve -- in my case, the one thing I don't like about the 317 is the Hi-Viz front sight. I know other people like 'em just fine, but for me, they just don't offer enough precision. I'd like to swap it out for a Patridge or ramp sight when I can get around to it.

Sure is a handy little piece, though... :)

Jframe, isn't the rear sight on your gun a v?
instead of a square notch? If so, probably S&W could change both for you.

Steve -- I agree...I'm not crazy about the V-notch either! The 63 has the good ol' square rear sight.

I can prolly just buy a square sight and swap out the V -- but your point is well taken...Both sights will be replaced!
