Need y'alls help-
I currently have 3 pistols and a 30-30. If I have my way (and buy the Wife A LOT of Jewelry!), this collection may eventually grow by a rifle or two, and a pistol or two. Honestly, that's it. I have a small "pistol safe", where the 3 handguns are currently living. My 30-30, is hidden in the house, but locked with a factory lock. I just found out that my wife is pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This will be our first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I'm incredibly excited. I saw the first Ultra sound the other day, and just stood there, like an idiot, completely dumbfounded. What do I do? What do I say? Wow.

Anyway- I need a safe. I have only had the 30-30 for a month or so, and had planned on buying a safe soon, but now it is a priority. Here we go:

1. I had posted this on another site, and got 2 lectures- 1. How could I have a gun and NOT have it in a safe? Am I stupid? Also, on the same posting: 2. How could I have a gun AND HAVE it in a safe, how was I to protect myself? Please, no lecture, just advice.

2. "Buy the biggest you can get". Great, I'm looking for a smaller safe, because it's all I want. Again: Please, no lecture, just advice.

3. To a point, money is somewhat irrelevant. I am a firm believer that if someone wants it bad enough, they will get it. I'm looking for a deterrent to little kids getting in/ neighborhood kids breaking in for something fun to do, that sort of thing. If a professional thief gets in, and they want it bad enough, they will get it. Fire protection is somewhat important, too, but if my house burns to the ground, my dogs will probably be in the house, (hopefully my family is not), so a few guns will be the least of my concerns.

I have been looking at the AMSEC Teton 6022 and 5924, also the Fort Knox Defender 6026. Any ideas/ input down this line? It will be in the basement, bolted to the floor. The Walther will be still in the bedroom, in the handgun safe for proptection against things that go bump in the night.

I have guns not in safes all over the place. Most are, but there just ain't enough room. If you're safe...it's OK.

With a kid on the way does call for extra precaution.

Go to Walmart. they sell some light sheet metal safes that will do what you need for now. they make heavier safes that offer a little more protection.

The main goal here is not to have a child stumble across it accidentally and get hurt. A sheet meetal safe will do that. (put your ammo in there too) Bolt it to the wall so it won't turn over, sleep better at night.

If you want to go the large, fireproof, heavy, better route; by all means do so. Safes are great for storing all that extra jewelry, cameras and other valuables.

Safes they're not just for guns.

Fort knox builds pretty good stuff. I use thier safes, but I went with the guardian series. They are really only rated as an RSC(residential security container), but they are good enough for most of us. A true safe starts at around the 4,000 dollar mark. :what:

If your worried about home security and the money's not an issue I would recommend the fort knox in a heartbeat.

If you're just worried about keeping it away from the youngster, a homack or stack-on from a local store would be sufficient.

There are also browning, champion, and liberty RSC's you could consider.

I went with fort knox after spending A LOT of time researching the different features companies had.

Remember: Do it once, do it right, then you won't have to do it again.

BTW: Welcome to THR, and congratulations on the good news.

Ex-MA;

Ben's a little high on his true safe number. I do this professionally, therefore, I have a different opinion. If your .30-30 has a take-down feature, or is one of the trapper type models with a short overall length, you can get into a U.L. 1-hr fire & B burglary safe for around $1500.00 - 1750.00. If you actually need a 5' tall safe, then the price goes up to around $2500.00 - $3,000.00.

However, if you decide that an RSC is what's best for you, then you can get some protection for under $600.00. Some, not much.

With jewelry accounting for a significant amount of value of the contents, there are several considerations you want to think about. Discuss this with your & other insurance agents. What level of loss will they protect to? What protection will your, or another, insurance company demand in order to attach a rider for the jewelry? Will your premiums drop a significant amount depending upon the type of protective container you buy? Hint, if it's an RSC, don't bet on it. If it can pass the U.L. one-hour fire certification, B burglary, & weighs 750 lbs or more, they should be reducing your costs. Or you need to be changing insurerers. And then, what type of protection will they afford the container itself? In other words, if you spend $2,000.00 for a true safe that protects $10,000.00 worth of contents from a house fire, they should be buying a new safe or factory rebuild for you. If they won't put that in writing, go shopping for another company or agent.

[flame shield] i have seen safes at both gander mountain and home depot, both seem stout and dependable for low cost gun security [/flame shield]
my first was sheet steel and came from sears, i still use it to store ammo
