A few years ago when I was still living in Cali a friend in another state was thinning his collection and had an early 70's Model 36 he wanted to sell. No ranges near me had any J-frames for rent, so I had never shot one, but I wanted it. Called my LGS to find out if it was legal to have it shipped to them for me, guess what, nope, not on the list. Must be considered an assault revolver with that huge capacity of 5 rounds.

For the record, I told him I'd send him the money and he should keep the gun until I got moved to Arizona and then he could send it to an FLL here, and that's what we did.

In point of fact, private party transactions are exempt from kali's "safety" list. I purchased numerous off roster guns that way. You still have to go through a FFL, but it's exempt. I got a S&W 27-2 with five inch barrel, S&W 66-1 with 2 1/2 inch barrel, Colt Python with 4 inch barrel, S&W 29-2 with 6 1/2 inch barrel, and some others. All off roster and all private party.

Unfortunately that wasn't what my FFL said.

Doesn't matter, I got it after I moved here, which was only a few months later and in Cali anyway I couldn't legally carry, only celebrities and maybe diamond dealers get a permit in L.A.

Any "smart" gun that can be made to fire by an authorized user can be made into a brick by another authorized user. What is to stop rabid anti-gun states from allowing a back door in smart gun programing to make them not fire when the owner picks it up? And at $2700, shooters aren't going to be lining up around the store to get one.

And he's right in your case (AZ friend seller and CA buyer)

In CA, in order to do a PPT of off roster guns, both parties have to be present at the same FFL at the same time - 'face to face' as it's known by. There is an exception for limited family members (I believe parent/offspring only)
