Hi this is my first thread on The High Road and i just purchased a Smith and Wesson Model 4006 for $300 it was a former police issue from Memphis PD, was this a good buy and what is the reputation of this handgun? Also any other info or stories anyone has on the gun i would like to hear thanks.

Well, I don't have any stories about it.. The price you paid, assuming the gun is in good mechanical condition is a fairly good one. Police trade-in 4006 that I see tend to be somewhere from $350 to $400 or so.

As for reputation, I'd say they have a very good one. Alot of police agencies have used them over the years. Most of the older smith autos don't get a huge amount of attention these days, simply due to the popularity of guns more currently issued to agencies. The smiths are heavy, and lighter plastic guns are all the rage. Among those who still care about them, the smith autos are pretty well known for accuracy and reliability.

Thanks Hexidismal, also would anyone know where to get a nice set of wood or rubber grips for them i would like to replace the factory grips on it they have a little holster wear etc. The gun seems to be in good mechanical condition i am going to take a trip to the range this weekend and put a 100 or so rounds through it. I knew it wasnt the lightest, most eye grabbing gun i just wanted something i could keep in the nightstand and take to the range every now and then. It was in my budget and i sold what i thought was a piece of junk Cobraray M11/9

Congrats on your new 4006!

Hogue grips makes both wood and rubber grips for the S&W 40XX series pistols.

In my experience the S&W 3rd generation pistols, to which your model 4006 belongs, are ultra reliable, and nicely accurate. They are well constructed and very durable as well.

The great thing about police trade ins, generally, is that they are carried alot, but usually shot very little. They are also maintained, checked, and given neccesary upgrades by factory trained armorers.

You might want to visit the Smith & Wesson forum too. Lots of 4006 fans there. Hope this helps! Enjoy your 4006. TJ

Great gun, I bought a Stainless 4006 Police trade in recently. Very VERY accurate (on par with my Beretta 96) but also its double action is smooth and makes for accurate first shot. I need to polish the gun in it's entirety as some holster wear has made "nickle plate" areas. Im thinking of polishing it all to make it look "nickle" or sending it off to the Smith Performance Center.

The thing I think is funny is the ton of "used" mags on the market for it. You can tell they were police mags carried in a pouch: The area towards the base (sitting up in the pouch) tend to have some surface rust, while the rest of the mag is "clean" :).

hey Almond,
I live in memphis and have yet to find a shop selling PD trade-ins. Where did you find yours?

The 4006 is a tank of a handgun, just about unbreakable. There are no "weak spots" that I know of. I have a couple of the 3rd gen 40s and they are reliable and accurate. I have never heard of an alloy frame Smith 40 wearing out, so I suspect that the stainless frames will fare even better,

1/7 Grunt i got it from Brighton Arms in Brighton TN there phone number is (901) 476-3030 if i recall correctly they said they had more of the 4006 and they also had a 5906 for $325 i really wanted too

CDNN has several grades of 4006 for sale, the most expensive is at $349.99.

I've owned one for about 15 years now. It's, like was said, a tank. Reminds me of a Ruger. Solid, dependable, reasonably accurate with ammo it likes, and can be used as a club in CQB. Most of the used mags that I see are Stainless, and have no rust problems.

CDNN has the SS 11 rounders for less than $15.00.:)

One of the 4006 versions, (TSW?) is the standard issue sidearm of the California Highway Patrol. My #2 son is a CHP officer and he wouldn't trade his for anything. He just got issued the newly purchased ones and he was able to buy his old weapon from the state. he loves them. I think theirs are gone through by S&W armorers prior to issue. He said his old one that he bought had over 22000 rds. S&W is rebuilding the old ones prior to sale to officers. I think they are built like a tank.

Had a guy that wanted my beat up, loose crane, no finish Brazilian contract S&W 1917. Traded me a pristine 4006 w/holster and 3 mags for it. Nice gun! Smoooooth double action pull. I shot a couple of IDPA matches with it and then sold it off because I didn't care for the weight. Still regret lettin it go, coulda used the thing to fire up all my old, nasty .40 reloads, thing was a tank!

I fired it today put 100 165g FMJ through it and it kept jamming up about every 3 to 4 shots i wonder if this was a bad mag i sure hope so i am just now cleaning the gun it was very dirty but i am going to try to purchase new mags this week and hopes that fixes the problem

The problem was it was not ejecting the empty cartridge for some reason i would drop the mag and pull the slide back and then pull back again and it would eject it. Any Suggestions?

First check for carbon and/or any goo buildup on the extractor, and give it a good cleaning. Did you clean and lube the gun before trying it out ? Then look for any what might appear to be any excessive wear on the extractor. If the extractor looks good, I'd suggest some new springs from Wolff.

Look on this page

When the S&W.40 first came out I read an article about some California Police Dept. putting some .40's to their testing standards. And I remember this model comming out on top for them. A very good gun considering if yours is in good working order and not totaly ragged out.
