I removed my M&P 45 safety.

I bought a multi pack of springs from Home Depot for $4.79 and there is 5 of each in there, one spring in the pack is the perfect size and just needs to be cut to perfect length. Only purpose for the spring after safety is removed is to keep take down lever snug against sear block and under sear.

Not to be an alarmist, but be careful with anything from Home Depot, as they sell some of the cheapest, crappiest junk around. If a product is from a known-good brand, then fine, otherwise it's probably substandard (like their screws and other stuff).

I do not own a S&W M&P pistol but am considering a purchase of one at some time. Personally I see no use for a manual safety in a DA only type pistol, you want to make it safe, take your finger off the trigger. I have a Glock 19 and it took a while after I first bought it 20 years ago to get over the semi auto without manual safety but once I figured out it was essentially as safe as any DA revolver with rounds in the cylinder I got over it.

One of the reasons I've considered the M&P is the relative ease of lightening up the trigger. The procedure I'd found on the internet a few years ago. Here is a link that will be active for a couple weeks. M&P trigger job.pdff

Update: I got to the range Saturday, which is part of a local gun shop. I checked out the .45 in person (I'd only handled an M&P 9mm before), both compact and full size, and liked the ergos. The trigger pull isn't great, but isn't bad either IMO; not as springy as the Glocks I've fired, though it's been a while and my memory could be off.

Anyway, most importantly, he checked his distributor's website after I mentioned my above dilemma, and told me that in fact you CAN get the 4.5" barrel .45 M&P in black with the thumb safeties. I guess that answers the question; I mentioned to him that S&W's website doesn't list that particular combination, and he told me that S&W's site is often not representative of their actual items; in fact he mentioned a revolver that's on their site but hasn't been produced in about two years (can't remember the model, I'm really not a revolver guy).

So, I hope to pick one up before too long. Hope the info helps some others out.

They do exist - I have one next to my keyboard.

If you download the 1st part of the 2010 S&W catalog ... http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore/SmWesson2/upload/other/2010_S&W_Catalog_1.pdf ... and go to page 14, look at the second model from the top in the M&P 45 section, #109106. It states it's a black 4.5" model with manual safety.

Or, go to the website model listing and look at page 2 of the M&P pistol section, the 4th model from the bottom of the page, which also displays #109106.

(There's also a CA compliant 4.5" black 45 w/manual safety that also has a magazine safety, #109006 listed.)

Naturally, it's always best to call the company and confirm with customer service that a product code listed for a pistol has the specific features desired. Changes can happen.

Is there any difference in trigger feel if you have the manual thumb safety and/or mag safety?
clutch, I have a M&P45 with both thumb and magazine safety. They do not change the trigger feel.

The thumb safety when engaged (raised), only blocks the rearward movement of the trigger bar and has no effect on trigger feel when dis-engaged (lowered) as it has no contact with trigger parts.

The magazine safety also has no contact with trigger parts when dis-engaged. When engaged by magazine lowering, drops into magazine well by spring tension and pushes trigger bar to the right of the sear so that it cannot engage the sear. When dis-engaged by the magazine, trigger bar returns to the normal position under the sear and functions normally.

M&P

I was looking for an XD 45 and saw a used, in very new condition with Tritium night sites for $600.00. I love this weapon. I have an XD 40 which I like very much, but the M&P won out as my everyday carry. Accurate as all hell, close to my Beretta 92 FS which is unbelievably accurate. The trigger is heavier but it did not affect accuracy. I actually like the trigger and do not plan on modifying it with an APEX. It's a great gun...you will not go wrong with one. The interchangeable back straps are great. I put a Pachmyer "glove" on and the thing fits my hand like it was made for me. :D

Splash, I did a 50% of trigger job posted at Dan Burell's website and it improved the trigger and shot groups immensely. My 3" shot groups with factory trigger shrank to 1"-2" at 15 yards (and this was with "rough" filed parts not yet polished).

If you don't want to replace the trigger, at least do a "polish" job. Mine was "gritty" from factory, but is now smooth and crisp.

I filed only 50% of the sear indicated in the PDF and did light filing of the other parts (you can always remove metal, but not put back).

I started a thread outlining my trigger job progress and plan on updates once all the filed parts are polished and verified by a range test.
