Smith and Wesson Model 40 - Info?

So I went to the gun store to stock up on some .38 ammo that was on sell, and there she was - a new S&W Model 40 (aka lemon squeezer) for ~$550. I already have a 442, but I actually like the extra weight of the 40. Can anyone give me the pros/cons of the back strap safety? On the plus side, it didn't have the internal lock.

I need another .38 snub like I need another hole in my head. Currently, I have a Colt Cobra, a 2.5" S&W 586 (chambered only for the .38 spl), a three inch Ruger SP101, and the before mentioned S&W 442. Still, it was awful pretty. I'd probably just add a Tyler T-Grip to it. Anyhow, I'd appreciate any feedback on the gun and if the price seemed fair? THANKS!

Best concealment revolver ever made. I have two and they get carried a lot.

They came with a small pin hidden under the stock panel that could deactivate the grip safety by pinning it down. It falls out and is lost if not careful when removing the stocks. One of mine still has the pin, the other does not. I am not aware of the grip safety when shooting mine.

The stocks are unique to this model. No other S&W shares these stocks.


This one was stored on a boat and corroded. Bought it cheap and found the genuine stags for $6 on ebay. Been carrying it for 15 years.






Bought this pretty one 5 years ago but can't bring myself to retire the old one.

I've heard nothing but good things about the M40 so it's probably true. If you decide you like the lighter J frame over the heavier one, S&W also makes their Model 42 again which is the same revolver only in an Airweight.
