Smith K-frame grips: round or square?

Thats about it.

S&W has now changed to mostly all round butt frames on all frame sizes.

You can change the grips on a round butt frame and make it feel like a square butt.

But you can't make a square butt feel like a round butt, no matter what you do.

rcmodel - actually, you can make a square butt into a round butt ... but it's an irreversible mod.

Not on one of MY babies, you understand, but I have seen it done.

Yes, I am aware of that.

But most folks don't want to take a bench grinder to a S&W just so they can change grips.

I do NOT like round butts. I cannot shoot a K or N frame gun with a round butt. (J frames are so small it doesn't make much difference).

A round butt on a K frame is just not right. A round butt on an N frame is an outright travesty!!! :D

I don't have any problem shooting either grip style. As mentioned, for a number of years now, S&W has used the round butt on most everthing.

Gotta be careful roundbutting a S&W as you can disfigure the SN

It seems like S&W is also going to more and more rubber grips. I just bought a model 637 with the rubber grips, so now I'm looking for a set of wood grips (for a model 36, 37, or 60 round butt) to replace the rubber. Looking forward to the next GS for them, but that's over two months away in my area. I just wish my K frames had the round butt.

Oh I so dissagree short tubes need round butts. 2 1/2" or 3" round butt 19 or 65s are yummy.
as is a 3" 629 round butt.

Im one of those who had a square butt Model 13-1. I really liked the feel of my dads round butt Model 19. I got brave one day and grabbed a sharpie and a grinder and went to work. I now have a round butt Model 13 that fits like a glove and shoots like a lazer. I couldnt be happier. Would I do it to someone elses gun? No but I was willing to chance it on mine.

I agree that round butts on K frames look kinda funky, but I can't argue with how they shoot or carry. I picked up this Model 10 the other day and have had it to the range a couple of times and packed it around a bit.

The design is a little ugly to my eyes (and not pinned either), but it carries and shoots extremely well.

I prefer the square, but like the open back strap. I always have to try a few before I find one that fits, evident by my surplus grip box .

This k22 took me 4 tries. Started with the original wood grips (knuckles rubbed on trigger gaurd), then Hogue (ok, but sticky), then Butler Creek (too short), and then I found these Pachmyr Gripper Professionals (the compact version of the gripper with open backstrap). This seems to be the best fit for me on this gun. I wish I could sample them all without buying :(.

I'll sell the rubber butler creek square butts if anybodies interested, they are the compact versions with no home for the pinky?

I like the round a bit better, also like DAO better.

I have a M64 (no dash) with 4"brl , bobbed hammer , DAO , round butt
Paid $300 at a gun show 14-15 months ago

I also have a M64-3 with 4"brl , square butt
Paid $350 at a gun show 11 months ago

My M686-2 is a square butt revolver and it's one of my favorite to shoot. I have a few round butt revolvers I put round-to-square conversion grips on, much better IMO. (except for concealability)
