After coming home from the range on Saturday I started to clean my S&W 22A. I used Hoppe's 9 on the inside of the barrel and the chamber. Once I was done I sprayed Rem Oil on the out side of the gun, like I always do, and to my disbelief the color on the barrel came off. I don't me a little bit I mean the whole barrel is now without blueing. I do not know what S&W used but the barrel is not blued it was like a paint. I called S & W yesterday and they said I should send it back and they will issue a call ticket. I was told that the individual I was talking to had never seen this before. Somehow I find this hard to believe. Anyone else have a problem like this before. If they will not correct this any suggestions on where I can have the barrel refinished? Thanks let me know. Dudley

Send it in S&W will take care of it. I have used #9 and Rem oil on mine without a problem. The coating on both my barrels is very tough. I have used brake cleaner and all sorts of stuff and no issues. It must be a bad batch of coatings. :)

After a few week I contacted Smith & Wesson and I was told that they would send me a pick up ticket for me to send the barrel back for inspection. Well, within three days I had the UPS call label and last Friday I sent the barrel back. I had a call from Smith & Wesson today and I was told that they will refinish my barrel for me at no charge. The customer service representative was very helpful and explained that I should not use Hoppe's 9 or Rem Oil on the finish because both will cause the problem to happen again. It is my understanding that the barrel has a Melonite finish. Just wanted to let everyone know that Smith & Wesson stood by their product.
Thanks Dudley

poor choice?

Sounds to me S&W made a poor choice of finishes, if it won't stand up to two of the most common chemicals used in cleaning and preservation. And I have one of those.

The Melonite process diffuses Nitrogen and Carbon into the surface of the part. It becomes part of the surface molecules of the part.

It is pretty much another name for Glocks tenifer finish.
It has no color, and some other finish must be applied on top of it to give color to the part. Glock uses Parkerizing.

I can assure you that whatever S&W is using on 22A's is not Melonite.

It sounds to me like some sort of "Shake & Bake" paint if it is not oil & solvent proof.

22A finish

I am not sure of the finish now. I tried to find where I came up with the Melonite finish but was unable to. I guess it is not that important. However, I am concerned that there are only two products that I can use to clean and protect the finish. I guess what I do not understand is whe for over 10 years I cleaned the 22A the same way each time and used the same type of products and did not have a problem. I went to the S&W website and checket the current manual for the pistol. They only give general cleaning requirements and make no mention of using special bore cleaner and finish protection to keep the finish from coming off. I guess I will have to follow what they told me, because if I don't I am sure that they will not refinish the barrel a second time. Thanks for all of the responses. Dudley
