How about it? Would you pay $360 including shipping and FFL fee for a excellent condition S&W 4056?

Seems like a nice compact thin .40 cal. Can't find any specs on it but I bet its close in size to the Kahr K40.

Anyone with any opinons pleash chime in, I just might pull the trigger and get one.

Oh yeah, heres the link.

Any "third-gen" Smith autoloader is a good, reliable gun, and that is an excellent price, but be sure it comes with both magazines as they are a little pricey. I had not heard of this model, but Smith made a dizzying array of these pistols, not always with consistency in the numbering system. From the picture this appears to be the same size and shape as a 6906/6946, therefore it will be a fair bit larger than a Kahr, mostly in the fatter grip. The DAO trigger used on these has a short and smooth - but not light - stroke, with a shorter reach than the DA trigger on the DA/SA guns. It does not have "second strike," requiring the action of the slide to reset the hammer. When fully cocked the hammer (which is spurless) protrudes very slightly from the rear of the slide. If a cartridge fails to fire it has to be ejected. Finally, these guns typically have magazine safeties.

I agree, the 3rd generation S&W's are very high quality pistols. They were used by many police departments. And, when it comes to service, Smith & Wesson is probably the best in the business.
I have the 6906 model 9mm. and it has been a joy to own and operate. It's a keeper that I would not sell!

I have a 4014 that I bought via CDNN. Very happy with it thus far. It's a big gun for a "compact" and is bigger than my Glock 23 so I'm not sure I'd agree that it would be on par with the Kahr products in terms of size.

But for a play-around gun the S&W third gen are a good cost value.

One bit of advice, if you get the weapon. Get some big fat Hogue grips for them. The standard thin panels S&W grips suck IMO and the Hogue make it feal like a totally different gun. Much more comfortable.

I had the 2nd generation gun (645) and it was reliable and gobbled up anything I fed it. Now I'm sorry I let it go.. but happy that I picked up something I wanted more for it (S&W 610-2). That 645 was the last 45 cal gun I owned.. it was fun to shoot but would be expensive to feed these days.. The 4506 is just the next in line and it should be just as nice.

The 645 was fully comparable to the third generation 9mm pistols and is considered "third generation" I believe. Although I like the 5906 sights better than the 659, I think Smith cut a few more corners making the 5906. Still, the price sounds very attractive for the gun and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
