I was visiting the local gun range today and after shooting I perused the gun cases for another excuse to blow some cash.

As I was looking at one of the Kimbers they had, one of the owners said, "Have you looked at an STI before?"

I hadn't.

So he hands me one of STI's 45 full size pistols.

The action was like rubbing a stick of butter on superheated Teflon. It blows Kimber completely out of the water. And the trigger was simply amazing. And even better, all the STI pistols I looked at were just as smooth! It wasn't just some super tweaked competition model; it was all of them.

I haven't shot one yet, but if the shooting matches the rest of what I've seen, it should be awesome.

So, what does everyone know about STI? Good company? Good products?

I know they're made in Texas, so that's a plus for me.

Interestingly enough, they have pistol kits along the same lines as you would build an AR-15.
 
I really dislike STI, not becuase of thier products( they make great guns) but thier politics.
 
Own one. They are simply awesome guns. I daily carry a STI Spartan. Others I shoot with have a 2011s and they use the for competition and for off duty carry.
 
I've purchased 2-5" STI's.
They were gifts for family.
Another advantage (in my perspective), they have the least MIM crap of any production pistol. I swapped out the (plastic) triggers and (plastic) MSH and the pistols were done.
Quite accurate. Son in Law has 6K rds. through his-it is still tight.
 
What about their politics?

At the local IPSC club I belong to, lots of guy sshoot STIs. From stock single-stacks to raceguns.

For the OP:

I bought a STI 9mm Trojan. It is smooth as butter and is my favorite handgun (so far). I've got 2,000 rounds through it with no problems. I really like the "high cut" trigger guard and high rise beaver tail.

Great people to deal with. The factory is a few miles north of me and when I toured it you couldn't ask for a nicer bunch of folk.

My Trojan has been completely reliable and it is very accurate with a great trigger. I also have a Spartan, and while it doesn't get shot as much as the Trojan it is a great gun at its price point.

STIs main "political" stand has been their cessation of sales to California. Their press release may be seen here:

So I may be mistaken, and often am, but that reads like the problem is California not STI. BUT Obviously STI produced the statement so it would be canted to their side of the story.
 
indeed. Barrett wont sell to California either. now we just need glock, beretta, colt, HK, sig, ruger, springfield, remington, winchester, bushmaster, dmps, marlin and everybody else to cut them off too.
 
I have no actual hands-on experience with their products, but I find their guns to look really cheesy for some reason. The LS9 looked like a neat concealed carry piece, but then I noticed it has a steel frame. They should have lightened it up some more by using aluminum. Maybe they couldn't because of their linkless barrel design? Not even sure how that works...

I'd still like to handle one to see what this smoothness talk is all about.

I agree if ALL the gun and ammunition manufactures cut them off from sales. Things would change in a hurry when body guards, security guards, and LEO run out of guns and ammo.

Only prob was they already were not selling to CA. That is what ticked me off.


I will not buy guns from companys that will not do biz with the general public. The "LEO only" crap has to stop.
 
for a few more hundred $$ you can get a real piece of art, built by true artisans. Check out Les Baer Custom, in particular the Thunder Ranch Special. In my opinion this is by far the best value for the dollar and shoots like a dream out of the box. Built to last many lifetimes....:D

California's stance on firearms warrants any "stink" a firearms company wants to make; IMO.

As for companies that don't sell to the general public, I don't see why that is a problem or how it really pertains to STI.

They are apparently selling to the general public everywhere else except California, right? And really, would you prefer that they punished LEOs because of California's stupid firearm legislation? I hope you don't.

And correct me if I am wrong, but there are lots of companies that sell only to LEOs or have product lines that are only sold to LEOs. Are they somehow bad companies? Should everyone be mad at them because they decided that they want their business model focus on LEOs?


All that being said, let's have some more discussion about the actual firearms that STI makes, not the politics of a single wacky state.

I was looking at one of those too and was very impressed. However, I didn't find the weight all that foreboding. Compared to the SIG P220 Compact (29.6 ounces), the LS9 (28 ounces) didn't seem any worse. But I agree that a lighter LS9 might be nice, though I have always liked a heavier gun. Have to write STI and see if they have any plans for a lighter model.
 
I feel sorry for the humble subjects and peasants in California, but can't find fault with any firearms manufacturer choosing not to jump through the Peoples' Republics' hoops. Nor do I see any problem with manufacturers making an issue out of it and pointing out that the government of California is, essentially, operating in a state of insurrection against the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Edit to Add -- STI makes a very nice product for competition use. Not sure where they stand for duty use or daily carry.
 
I had thesame happen to me while I was in a gun shop. I was looking at some Springfields and one of the guys at the counter asked me if I had ever heard of STI. I had heard of them but never seen one. After playing with the Spartan, the lawman, the Sentinel, and the Trojan........ I now own an STI Trojan in 45acp. I love it !!! It is very accurate. I have put 500 rounds through it so far with no troubles. The slide to frame fit is very nice. The triggers, even on the low end STI's , are very adequate. The spartan is around $600 and it gets good reviews. I have been bombing STI with questions on my future STI purchase and they return my emails pretty quickly and act as if the are eager to help and anwer my questions. Good Luck!
 
Imagine if all of the U.S. firearms makers were like Mr. Barrett. Think the legislators would suddenly change their attitude if none of their Law enforcement could get parts or service for their firearms? I realize it would be economic suicide for most companies but I have to admire that man for telling the People's Republic of California no more for you.
 
I'd be more interested in STI's offerings if they weren't butt ugly.

For the price commanded, performance and style should be mutual and not an either/or proposition.

I am half surprised that their revolver doesn't have TEXICAN written on the side somewhere.

STI--Home of the dumbest looking 1911s ever, which is saying something with Sigarms' aesthetic abortions on the market.

This is the only problem I have with STI. I dislike "Billboards" on any pistol and STI has some of the huge-est slide markings I have ever seen.
 
I'm not a fan of the STI "Billboards" either but I have a Trojan and a Spartan and they are both very nice guns for the price. Two of the most accurate 1911's I own. They are not as nice as a Wilson or a Baer but IMHO they are head and shoulders over Kimber or Springer.

Oh yea, just cut California off from gun sales,,,, The anti gun crowd and the politicians would be very happy.

I do understand what you all mean, cut em off, but I really think this would play right into the anti-gun crowd hand. The anti gun folks would love this idea.

If they give the gun companies enough crap, they will go away.

My Idea, Lower the prices in those states, so the public can afford more guns, that will p/o the anti gun folks.
