Snake shot?

I had to put 3 38 snakeshot rounds into a 6' diamondback's head years ago to make it dead. Otherwise, never actually tried them. I try to keep a 410 sigle shot handy when I'm in the woods in warmer weather, which works great (as would any shotgun) . I have a friend who keeps a junky rg 22 revolver full of snake shot in his tackle box that he said he has used to deal with cottonmouths.

Always said I should get a Taurus Judge or SW Governor for snakes when hiking...but I haven't been out walking the desert in some time. I figure a .410 would do the trick even out of a short barrel. I remember shooting CCI shotshells a LONG time ago, and they would not cycle a semi auto, and the pattern was huge.

I am more likely to run into snakes than anything else when I walk in the woods. So I carry along a few rounds of shot ammo.

I load shot loads in 32 mag brass for my bud to use on his little ranch in Weatherford Tx. He has killed well over 50 snakes with those. They are loaded with #12 shot and capped by 308 gas checks. He has killed snakes as far away as 15 feet with them. At 5-6 feet he will levitate. He is scared to death of snakes. I started using #12 shot after reading a Mike Venturino article on using #12 shot. And since there is no capsule the shot isn't spun out into a donut type pattern. The gas checks themselves will blow through a thick piece of cardboard. He shoots them from a Ruger Single Six with 5.5" barrel.

Most rattlesnakes will leave you alone if you give them a chance. In the woods or desert, a walking stick is much better than snake shot. That said, I have a couple snake shot cartridges aligned to be the first two rounds in the revolver I carry. I don't think it is beyond reason to open a shed door and be much closer to snake than either of us wants.

Ive used The CCI 9mm shells several times over the years on venomous snakes near the house. Kel-Tec PF9 and Sig P365.

They are effective to 12’ or so, beyond that iffy.

Don’t count on them to cycle the pistol, use it as a single shot and hand feed, there is nearly always time. One shot seldom enough to kill but it does stop them so follow up is simple.

Be very careful, the shot will bounce / ricochet, cover eyes and face! Get everyone else away!
