Well I was looking into getting a snub nose .357 or .38 for my CCW in the summer, it gets really hot here, and my standard carry is a IWI Jericho, but I am getting tired of carrying it in shorts.

So I wanted to get a small snub nose to just carry in my pocket.

I have always wanted a snub nose, but its hard for me to find one that I like because I have big hands, and most snub noses have small grips, so my pinky usually doesnt have room on the grip, and on some my ring finger is almost slipping off the grip.

So the other day I was at a local gun shop when I saw a Rossi .38 R35102.

I held it and I loved it, it pointed well, cylinder felt good.
I was hesitant to buy it, since I have heard some bad stuff about Rossi, but that was before I heard they got bought by Taurus.

But I dont like that its a 5 shot, I wanted at least 6 shots.

So these are the guns Im looking at

A Taurus 617, or a Rossi 461, anybody have any opinions on these guns?

And please dont come in here and tell me to buy a S&W, unless its under $450 NIB like these two revolvers.

Thanks guys

I recently purchased a Rossi 461 and absolutely love the gun. It's a little on the heavy side for pocket carry IMHO, but that's not really a problem if you've got a good pocket holster and a good belt. The gun is very accurate, the recoil is not bad at all, and it gives you the option of a 6th shot. A great buy for your money.

is the grip length on the 461 comparable to the 351? or you dont know?

yea the price is what motivated me to think about the Rossi

let me ask you a question since you have one, is the front side not flat on the top?

the 351 I was looking at the front sight was like this \ but not that exaggerated.

Sorry, but I have to break your rule when a S&W Model 66 in 2-1/2" barrel is exactly what you're looking for.

I get a kick out of guys who set their price limit and buy a second tier product when you can just wait a little and save up the little difference it would take to get a first tier product that you would end up handing down to your grandkids.
Street price at Bud's should be somewhere around $450 or so.
This link is for their 4" barrel version, but the part number for the 2" model is shown at the bottom.

You shuld be able to find a S&W 642 airweight for right at $450 new or if you're willing to go used they can be found for $350 or less.

The bark from .38 +P is more than I really enjoy with a pistol that light - but it does make for a very handy pocket gun.

well I ended up getting a Rossi 462 .357 mag revolver

I got a great deal on it at my local Academy sporting good store

259.99 NIB, cant beat that.

I just bought a S&W 642 for $465, after tax & DROS fees, total was $527.

In my experience, it pays to pay a minimum for certain guns. I have a tuned up Taurus 605, which I like, my 642 is just better. I've had my first Taurus fail on me after 100rds and I had to send it back to Taurus, & I've seen more than a handful of Rossi snubs have problems. My S&W, if it ever were to have a problem, I can just take it to any of a choice of gun smiths around here who I trust.

oh, & BTW, here's a comparison of three of my guns (only three, I wanted them to be big enough in the pic to provide detail), a Glock 30SF, a Taurus 605, and the new S&W 642.

The 642 is by far lighter than the others, & out of a snub IMO the .357's scant improvement in performance doesn't justify the control issue. The control of the .38special is much better, especially with modern +P SJHP ammo.

The 642 is the favorite (snub) of many leading shooting instructors, Massad Ayoob included. I think I saw Gabe Suarez whip one out during live fire failure drills on one of his vids.

Go to the range and give one a try, I really think that you'll notice a difference. Besides, I'd rather fire a .38 indoors than a .357 ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

BTW, if you really want "at least" 6 shot .357, look for a snubbie 686.

It was the Academy in Corpus Christi, they always have amazing deals. Everywhere else wanted to charge me at least $380.

And for people who keep pushing the S&W, I didnt buy one because the Taurus Rossi warranty is so good.

Well calling the Taurus hotline and having them ship it free and fixing it free is a lot better than standing in front of a gun smith preparing to pay for your first tier parts

Sorry but I have to call you on this one. The S&W warranty is every bit as good as Taurus and better. Their CS is a lot better too!

Again I have to disagree. Who told you Taurus will pay to ship your gun back to them? The person that did lied to you but I know for a fact S&W will send you the pre-paid label to ship to them.

I stayed out of this thread because you asked not to be told to buy a S&W but I had to answer those 2 things you said. Good luck with your revolver. I'm sure you will enjoy it...

You woul be able to find a nice used Smith model 65 with a 3" tube for only a little more than that, and have the best of both worlds: A six-shooter snubby that you can actually shoot well, and conceal, and sweat on, and Smith will fix it for free for life.

Personal experience, my mom has a Taurus Millenium in .45, and my brother broke the Taurus lock thing on the slide, we called, they had the best customer service I have ever dealt with, they paid for us to ship it there, they fixed it for free even though my mom told them that my brother broke it, and they shipped it back for free.

Yet another reason why I dont like S&W, the fanboys

we can compare side by side, the S&W warranty is only for the original purchaser, it only covers material and workmanship and factory defects, it says it clear as day in black and white

the taurus warranty is supposedly unlimited, Im not being so naive to think that its really unlimited, but the only thing mentioned in their warranty is damage caused by customer abuse is not covered. And in the manual customer abuse is given some examples, like shooter nonfactory ammo, not maintaining the gun et cetera

Listen guys, I bought the Rossi already, let this thread die, I cant go back and return it for a S&W nor would I. So whats the point of telling me how your S&W can regenerate and it beats you at chess everytime, how it wastes less ammo than any other gun youve seen
Im not going to suddenly like S&W guns

sorry if I hurt anyones feelings

Yeah - saw a Rossi snub .357 chrome (probably same gun OP bought) at the Academy here in Richmond for $ 299. Handled it, but in the end didn't buy it 'cause I figured my 3" bbl SP 101 really still filled that role.

But, i'm heading back to Academy in a couple of days, so you never know.

I had a Taurus and never again. If you have big hands, I'll assume you are a big guy. Get a S&W 686 with a 2 in barrel and you can even get on in a 7 shot if you get the 686+. Also Ruger makes a Snub nose GP100. They both have small grips, but you can replace them with smaller or larger ones if you want. Try to get them used to save some money. You can also look for a model 10 snub, or a Ruger Speed Six. Colt has a D frame 357 but it's pricey.

I carried a Taurus and I'll never trust my life to one again.

Get good used gun. Their out there.

I just got a SW 442 NIB the other day for $445. Sweet gun.

Also have a Rossi 461 bigger, accurate as hell and a sweet gun.

Good deal for the price. I personally won't go near a Taurus or Rossi anymore, had them both and I think they are fairly reliable, the metallurgy may not stand up to thousands of rounds but I don't shhot thousands of rounds anyway. I guess I am a gun snob, but I can't really condemn your choice at that price. I sort of catalog the Rossi & Taurus with the Charter Arms. Had all three, all are good.

Yea I hate the factory grips on the Taurus Snubbies, my pinky hangs off on all of them.

Thats actually one of the main reasons I bought the Rossi
