rifles and hi cap mags. Its more towards background checks and supporting new laws to screen mental cases from acquiring guns , right ?

Or did i miss something?

He never could ban assault rifles or hi-cap magazines on his own authority. He needs Congress to do that.

Didn't anybody stay awake in middle-school Civics class?

As far as the bans go, it's all about 2014 now. I predict that the media companies, PR firms and ad agencies do very well over the next two years.

What Birch Knoll said. It's still the same situation, they can ban mags, semi autos, private sales, sugar, everything they want if they get enough votes.

There is likely going to be a fight in Congress. How fierce, only time will tell. What Obama can accomplish via executive order is limited, protestations here and elsewhere notwithstanding.

Keep the pressure on your legislators in Congress, because that's where the battle will be fought.

Dear Leader cannot do that by mere fiat. Yet.

First, he needs to get itt past the US Senate and the US House of Representatives, then he could sign it into law.

This fight is far from over.

Call, write, and email your elected officials and representatives. Bury them in correspondence telling them that you will unseat them if they allow any measure that further restricts our 2A right to keep and bear arms.

Do not give up.

Right, Congress is our battleground. However I see more success for the liberals in state congresses, independent of federal.

Well, here anyway. :( I'm a bit concerned we'll end up like NY. Done well in 2013 so far, but just the beginning!

Letters threatening to vote them out "next time" carry little weight, especially if they've been in office a spell. I'm not saying not to bug the crap out of them...knock yourself out, it can't hurt, but it's not a panacea. If you want to hit them where they live you gotta start going after their sources of funding...which means you start not only writing to all the various companies that are supporting this crap, but actually ensuring that you don't do business with them or their affiliates. Express your opinions, but vote with your wallet.

or run candidates in the election who will fight them on this and other issues. I don't know why people don't try to find more pro gun Democrats. they are out there, and they could win. pro gun republicans are sort of a given, but ones that are soft on this, we should primary them.

We just need to keep framing the debate in logical ways, and continue to appeal towards the better nature of our fellow citizens. try to downplay the arguments that sound like crazy talk to others, even if you think they are the best arguments in the world. Try to frame the discussion in ways that doesn't immediately freak out your target audience.

Well of course HE never could unilaterally ban them. To try would have meant to fail and that would be a judicial failure he wouldn't risk.

Gonna be an interesting mid-term.

Folks, be sure to more than vote next time around but in fact get actively - and responsibly - involved in this next one.

Obama's not overly concerned about pleasing everyone now - he won re-election, the damage is done. He's going to piss people off and not apologize for it. That's why he was so quiet about gun control last term -- doing anything about it then would have been political suicide and his administration knew that. And now he gets to blame everything that doesn't go his way on Congress.

Must be nice to have no accountability!

I think its hidden in somewhere passing it to the BATF to formulate what it needs to be done.

Other than Executive Orders which are still undefined for me, he can not ban any kind of weapon, magazine capacity, or caliber that is not already on the books as a law. He is recommending...

NY state is another matter. They passed a law yesterday.

He's not going to tank his whole party just to get a stupid assault weapons ban passed. I'm not sure where you get the idea that the president has no accountability? The dems don't want to loose the midterm, nor the next election, nor the one after that. Feinstein will make noise, some will go along with her, but I doubt anything will pass, it will be political suicide for the whole party. They may want an AWB, but they also don't want an angry, motivated voting block working for their opposition.

Since I, and most others here, lack the clout to do more than not vote for them next time, it is the best I can do. If you have some influence beyond those of us who can only make that promise, then now would be the time to use it.

That option carries about as much weight as promising that I'll vote them out of office next time 'round and even then the amount of effect that I as an individual will have is negligible given the fact that I don't control large contracts or tremendous sums of money. If you have unlimited cash and contracting resources, now would be the time to use them.

I'll stick with e-mails, letters, phone calls, and contributions to the NRA.

When something has gone awry, all they have to do is villify the Republicans and blame them for everything. It's been working so far.

You beat me to it. It's frustrating to see so many threads popping up about non-existent bills and EOs. Not that I disregard the possibility of either happening, but we have enough real, factual problems to wrestle right now that need to be taken on. How about dropping the rumors and doltish misunderstandings of how our government works, and dealing with the situation we have rather than a phantom one certain folks like to create in their heads? Let go of the overly negative foregone conclusions and fight the political fight we have before us.

If you don't know how government works, there are several free online courses you can take to broaden your knowledge. If you don't know who your representatives are or how to contact them, www.senate.gov and www.house.gov will help you identify those individuals and share your thoughts.
