So much for backordered ammo from midway

Walking into a big box store looking for mass quantities of ammo is the issue. They were breaking cases in distribution to send to their stores, now you want the entire shipment to carry out? Not happening.

And the savvy buyers are lining up on the day that shipment is sent in, first thing before opening. You aren't even trying, just expecting there's going to be ammo on the shelf waiting. Nope, the buying public is smarter than that and getting in line ahead of you.

Distribution of ammo has moved to the rationed basis months ago. What is getting made is being parceled out by the buyers of bulk ammo who made purchases last year on a regular basis. Just because someone adds an order out of the sky for 5,000 or 50,000 rounds doesn't mean they get to shoulder aside another customer who has been regularly purchasing ammo for a decade. You aren't getting priority with the waiting list because that order is just like a hundred others - and the makers are taking care of LOYAL buyers, not panicked suburbanites with a credit card. They are not going to diss their regulars just to satisfy someone off the street who's never established any credibility.

Are they wrong? Nope, those big orders keep getting cancelled - it's been commented on for at least a year, "I placed five orders and when the first shipped I cancelled the others." That kind of consumer behavior is the norm, and why the distributors aren't even listening to the complaints. The ones they are concerned about have been buying for years and have the track record to prove it.

It was said in another thread, but really, when the power is out and you need gas, offering to by 1,000 gallons at the corner gas station just to get some respect for your order ain't going to work. They still can't pump it.

Prove me wrong? Place five orders for double the number, 10,000 rounds, and see when any of those might ship. It's already too late, a few thousand other guys already did, and when all is said and done, most of those will get cancelled. Your credit limit has nothing to do with it. Your credibility is what the distributors are prioritizing, so don't expect much consideration.

It's called supply and demand, right now, the ammo makers and sellers are just trying to keep all their major customers happy. It's the guys buying bricks instead of boxes who are creating the problem, nobody is going out shooting it. They are hoarding it.

BTW, order an AR15 with ten Pmags lately? You can walk out with them today. Supply and demand equaled out.

The local stores have tons of 223. Shoot that. I wonder the monthly amount of 22 LR actually shot by those now 'stocking up' and patrolling the stores at dawn before this all started.

If you shot 500 a month - about 3 local matches, then the folks with 20K rounds have a 40 month supply.

Not quite. The folks that had a 20k round supply a year ago now have about 14k rounds after this year... a 28 month supply.

Local walmart here said they get 22 ammo in every second day, and it gets put out in the morning now (used to be whenever it happened to get put out). It sells out in an hour or two every time.

Waiting a year for ammo is just not on my list of things to do this year.

If, about a year from now, 5,000 rounds of .22 CCI MiniMags I forgot I'd ordered showed up at my house, I'd be happy. It would be like finding a twenty in a shirt pocket; it's not "new" money, but it's still a nice surprise.

Generally, I do not put things on back order.

It is kind of a love/hate relationship but I have come to the position that I would rather not have to depend on back ordering things. Too much variability.

Any way, I do feel the pain of folks that are having trouble getting ammunition in these times of shortages.

"Keep calm and carry on"

In one of the local WalMarts today, I noticed (as usual) that they had ZERO .22 of any kind.
However, they had several hundred rounds of 5.56 FMJ from both Winchester and Independence brands. They also had ammo boxes of bulk 9mm (1200 rds.?) and another ammo (didn't notice caliber or quantity) and both were ~$490.oo.

Not sure why some people think that the big box stores aren't getting ammo. Out of the three biggest walmarts in my area, they all say they are getting it in a couple times a week. The order sizes are increasing too. I haven't bought in awhile because i don't need it, but when i picked some up the last time they had 40 bricks of 555 s and even more of the 333 packs. It sold as fast as the guy could work the register.

The smaller stores aren't seeing much, but there is plenty flowing into the area.

I don't necessarily think anything in particular is awry. We've all seen or have been part of the buying feenzy, when previously most of us gave little thought to stocking up on. 22 lr and were more concerned with major calibers. Making bulk orders, having freinds and family purchase ammo due to limits and people checking stores night and day all contribute.

Another big factor is affordability. Due to my budget I cannot afford to purchase a $30 box of ammo everytime I see some available, but I can squeeze out 8 bucks for some. 22 if I happen to see some.

At the last Tallahassee gun show I saw SW MP15 M4s for $645.00. A box of. 22 cci mini mags was $50.00. Go figure.

My point was when I ordered the delivery date to midwayusa was 31 dec 2014. Midway then changed the expected delivery date to Nov of 2014. I asked why and was told CCI changed the delivery date on them. I confirmed with midway that my order had now been pushed out to some point after their expected delivery date of nov 2014. So my question is simple. Where did the ammo go that was promised to midwayusa on 31dec 2013.

Im in my late 50s and until this current thing I had never, ever even bought a brick. I just went out and bought ammo as I needed it. Now you cant do that, so I buy every brick I see.....so is everyone else.

Queen of Thunder says;

I cancelled the order. Waiting a year for ammo is just not on my list of things to do this year. I'd rather start using a sling shot.

So what are your plans for 2014? I fail to see how having ammo on backorder at no cost to you is causing a problem.

You keep repeating the same dead horse regularly on THR even though others and myself post information and links to the contrary.

In post #116 you stated “For December I've managed to pick up 675 rounds. My gunsmith got 375 rounds of it and my son got the other 300 rounds plus another 4700 rounds for Christmas. Now I'm short again.”

You are not clear. Are you saying you gave away (or sold maybe?) 375 rounds to your gunsmith and 5,000 rounds (300 rounds plus another 4700 rounds) to your son for a grand total of 5,375 rounds? That hardly sounds like a shortage to me

If you are truly seeking 22 ammo as badly as you appear to canceling backorders make absolutely no sense at all.

I back ordered a 300 BLK barrel from Midway a couple of years ago. The in stock date changed three or four times, but one day I got a notice that it had shipped.

The millions of back orders and the millions of back orders canceled because one place came through causes the suppliers problems and costs them money.

I am not saying this is the case here. Not at all. I am just suggesting if consumers would be more reasonable with back ordering what they really need, and were patient, it would help.

Me? I am just trying to exercise discipline, restraint, and patience, while waiting for the day things get back to normal, and they will.

Now, where is that dang .22 LR I back ordered. :)

I placed 5,000 rounds of CCI mini mags on backorder. Hey why not. They have a shipment due date that wasn't extreme. Oh well that was a mistake to make. The date for Midway receiving the shipment was 31 Dec 2013. I noticed today that the date was pushed back to November of 2014 so after confirming the change in delivery date I cancelled the order. Waiting a year for ammo is just not on my list of things to do this year. I'd rather start using a sling shot.

Personally, I think it's too bad you dropped your order. If you needed the ammo, and the funds were allocated towards it, you could have simply left it be and received the delivery of your preferred ammo whenever it finally happened.

In the meantime, you could have been on the lookout for a small cache of cheaper .22LR to tide you through the intervening months while waiting for the CCI to come in.

Frustrating, I know...but now you're back at ground zero with no better options.

Ah, well...keep the faith!

i also stopped at the local dick's one evening just for the heck of it. walked to the back and got lucky. they had a couple cases of minimags for $10/box. i bought my limit of 3 boxes. wife bought her limit of 3. went back the next morning with 2 co-workers and we each bought our limit of 3. with this kind of buying behavior, it's impossible for manufacturers to keep up
this should pretty well explain the situation. In a few hours this guy and his friends buy eighteen boxes

I was at Wal-Mart right before Christmas. There were nine bulk boxes of Federal Auto Match in the case. The three guys ahead of me from one family bought all nine.

There's a shortage because there's a shortage. Self fulfilling, I was at the local farm store this past fall when it was shorter than it is now. I could have gotten three bulk boxes, but got one and elected to leave some for others. As long as people are greedy, it's gonna be a shortage until they run out of money

I have been shooting a lot more with my mini-14 and SKS rather than my 10-22 simply because I can replace that ammo, and I can"t my .22lr.

I want to buy one of the new Ruger 10-22 breakdowns, but since I can't shoot it, I haven't.

I also question why .22lr is so unavailable. Here it is, over a year after the panic began, other ammo is pretty widely available, including the heinous .223/5.56, but no .22lr.

As long as people are greedy, it's gonna be a shortage until they run out of money

some folks say if you didn't build up a big horde of .22LR over the past few years, you were an idiot for not planning ahead. now folks try to stock up when they see it available at a decent price and they're being greedy.

why do you hate the free market?

I was in Walmart about 9 am a couple of days ago doing some grocery shopping so I stopped by the ammo cabinet. About the only handgun ammo they had was .380 and .45. I bought a box of .380. I asked the clerk if he had been seeing any .22. He said he got in a few boxes of Win 333 the day before and it was gone quick. He said that was the first he had received in 12 days.
So, there's no tin foil hat to it. The stores are not receiving it like they used to.
And as far as the places that are asking 15 cents per round, in my opinion, that's the same as it not being available. Heck, internal organs are available if you pay enough money but not to the average buyer.

And as far as the places that are asking 15 cents per round, in my opinion, that's the same as it not being available.

it simply means that you have been priced out of the market. the market price of the ammo has become greater than the value you are willing to pay.

you can stick your fingers in your ears and scream "price gouging" or whatever you want to call it, but that's the reality.

we sure do have a lot of free market capitalism haters on this forum. :(
