So, there's this freaky "Line" on the cylinder of my new S&W 638....Help!

So.......was it really a dangerous crack?

Or a harmless mark?

I just read the whole thread and there's no answer.

Did they replace the cylinder because it was dangerous or just because the look of it would scare people?

I suppose we'll never know. They wouldn't voluntarily admit that they sent out a defective cylinder.

I would assume it was a crack, since they fitted a new cylinder rather than take (what I assume would be) 15 seconds to re-beadblast it.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about whatever the heck it was, though!

I might call them to see what comprised the line, just for the sake of curiosity.

It looks to me like a flaw in the original stock that they cut the cylinder from. Another poster mentioned this.

I don't understand how it would have missed scrutiny the first time around.

Glad you got it back, and that they replaced the entire cylinder (instead of just re-machining it). And it only took 2 weeks from doorstep-to-doorstep! Not to shabby IMHO.

Well, dangerous or not, one would have to get it fixed if you ever wanted to sell the gun at any point in the future.

Good thing you got it taken care of.

What is this of which you speak? :p

In the week-ish that I had it before I sent it back, it was already fast becoming a favorite CCW piece; the ability to pocket the thing and go was real handy. I don't think I'm going to let this thing go.
