A few years back, I got ambitious and put together a G1 FAL kit on a DSA receiver. Turned out very nice. For those who aren't familiar with the rifle, the barrel comes with a little block on it that acts as a key to hold 'muzzle devices' on the end of the rifle. You know, just push it on and turn to lock.

Now this (nicely reparked) kit came with the original flash hider, and while I hadn't installed it, the ease with which it could be attached to the barrel got me to worrying about constructive possession of an AW (remember the ban?). To reduce the possibility of confusing some authority figure, I moved the G1 flash hider to a safe place away from the safe where the rifle lives.

So, last week I went to get out my flash hider and stick it on the rifle. Might as well make it whole, I thought. (And yes, my foreign parts count is fine :) ) The only problem is...I can't for the life of me figure out where it is. Been through all my boxes of parts, the safe, looked under the bed, and asked my wife if she 'cleaned it up'.

Anybody know where I put it? Anybody else do things like this? I'm starting to think 'senior member' has another meaning.

check the fridge...I am always accidently putting stuff in there.

I have a habit of putting small detachable gun parts under the foam in my rifle cases. When I need the part I generally end up looking through all of them one after the other. Just a shot in the dark. I doubt the dog ate it.

I usually assign parts like that to a "special place" - you know, a place where there's NO WAY I'll forget where it is. Then I can never remember where the special place was. I should just throw 'em all in a pile so I can find 'em. :)

I'm about to build a STG58 FAL! I got Gunplumber's excellent book and video set, and you're a beginner like I am they are a must. Now to get that receiver stub off of the barrel!

IM with wedge on this

Look in the Fridge. And if you dont find it keep going back to the frodge and look for it. Thats where i look for my misplaced keys. Never find them there but i always look in there 3 or 4 times when it gets really stressful

Hey, I've been walking back to the fridge all day. Now the black beans, fish tacos, leftover pork chops, and tortillas are all gone and I still can't find my flash hider.

Had to make sure it wasn't at the bottom of any of the bowls, you understand.

I do remember (kind of) the day I moved it. I remember I was gonna put it someplace safe....

Someday I'll learn to slap myself whenever that phrase comes into my mind. 'Someplace safe' generally seems to translate to 'Somplace I'll never look in 100 years'

I confess I did research on the internet about how to build my fal :what:

It hasn't blown up yet, so I think I'm ok, I think. Hey! That's why I need the flash hider. If it does blow up, it'll hide the flash--won't it?

An easy way to get that receiver stub off the barrel is with a dremel and a cold chisel. That's how I did it when I built my STG58, worked great.

My gun parts don't get lost. At least, I don't lose them. I believe that the underwear gnomes have moved on to phase 2 and have started stealing other things they need for phase 3 (profit). I completely broke down the internals of a Marlin 60 in order to replace the feed block and ejector assembly. I put all of the parts in a baggie, sealed it up, labeled it, and put it on the bench. When I went to put the rifle back together (a few months later), I pulled out the baggie and started assembling. At this time I noticed that the recoil spring and guide rod were *poof* not there anymore. I scoured my work bench area, to no avail. I had to buy a new spring and rod. Still haven't found the originals...damn gnomes....

Do you have cats musher?

Nah, they can't pull a sled worth beans and the SPCA kept griping about me putting one in lead.

Gnomes, now there's a scary thought. Any idea why they might be stealing parts of assault weapons.

I second the dremel-cold chisel strategy. My kit came with the stub removed, but I used that approach to knock the stub off an AK kit. Worked like a charm. Just be careful and don't cut into the barrel threads.

I do stuff like this all the time... Can't even claim geezerhood, I've done it for years. :D What happened is: You put it in a "safe place" This may involve an undiscovered dimension... There are only two ways you'll ever see that item again...

1) You'll come across it accidentally, while looking for something else. If you are very lucky, you'll recognize what it is and recall that you were looking for it... :uhoh:
2) Go buy a brand-new one. You will promptly trip over the missing item... :cuss:

Well, it works for me... Poorly, but it works... :what:

Good luck,

Tom

Still looking.... no joy on the flash hider, but I just found the winter trigger for my Garand, hey and it's winter too. How lucky is that? :D

I know for a fact that buying a new flash hider will cause the old one to come out of hiding, but I know my rights. I'm not budging until it gives up.

Don't you have a cigar box or ammo can where take-off sights, sling swivels and the like end up? How about the box the gun or parts kit came in, up in the attic? In the gun cleaning kit? With your shotgun chokes? Strung on your duck call lanyard? On the end of the pull chain on the closet light? With your collection of dead/dented magazines you're planning to fix some day? In the toolbox with the battery terminal puller and valve core tooll?

I do this all the time. Drives me nuts. Good luck. Now where did I put that bore condition disk for my M-96?

I know you all were worried about this and just wanted to let you know that I found my flash hider.

Had to move out of the house and pack everything I own into boxes. Just wanted to pass that little trick on in case any of you still have missing items.

Thanks musher, I distinctly remember putting the elevation adjuster for a Lee Enfield in a box when we were getting ready to move. We've moved twice since then and still no elevator. Any other suggestions?

Yep, that's a simple one. You have to move back to your old houses in reverse order to get back to the point where you packed the part.

Anybody know where I put it? Anybody else do things like this?
Yep. I have the same problem with a Nikon 3-9 compact scope I removed from a rifle I sold 4 years ago.
My honey swears she did not throw it out. :scrutiny:

Still no clue where it went, but I think there may be a big room somewhere that has everything in it I have ever misplaced. :D :D

Try looking under the heaviest, most difficult to move object in the vicinity. That's where small parts always go for me.
