N.Y. Bill Would Classify Dogs As Weapons
By MICHAEL HILL

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Shotgun. Switchblade. Blackjack. Dog?

A dangerous canine would be defined as a "deadly weapon'' under a bill before the New York Legislature.

"Some of these dogs are killing machines,'' said Assemblyman Patrick Manning, whose proposal also would allow towns to ban certain breeds.

The bill is among a pack of legislative solutions being offered nationwide to address the problem of vicious dogs, which Manning said are becoming ``the weapon of choice for drug dealers or gangbangers.''

The legislation doesn't single out any particular breed, but frequent targets in other states are pit bulls and Rottweilers, which have been involved in highly publicized attacks on people.

Manning's bill is called "Elijah's Law,'' after a 3-year-old mauled by a Rottweiler last fall in New York City.

Animal advocates said the proposal to characterize dangerous dogs as deadly weapons is novel, although cities including Denver and Cincinnati already have passed bans on pit bulls. And an Ohio law requires owners of vicious dogs to carry at least $100,000 worth of liability insurance.

Stephanie Shain of The Humane Society of the United States said she was not aware of any statewide bans on breeds.

Some communities with pit bull bans have reported fewer attacks, but many animal advocates believe bans are overly simplistic, sweeping away good dogs along with the bad.

Prince George's County, Md., is considering repealing its pit bull ban because of the number of family pets being destroyed.

"There are perfectly wonderful, safe pit bulls living with families and there are Labrador retrievers that are dangerous,'' Shain said.

The society advocates looking at the problem dog by dog, rather than breed by breed. Shain said local animal control officers should be empowered to restrict free-roaming or menacing dogs before they cause serious injury.

Also before the New York Legislature is a bill that would allow the destruction of dogs that unjustifiably attack a cat or another dog. Another bill would bar convicted drug dealers and other felons from owning pit bulls, Rottweilers or any vicious dog over 10 pounds.

Manning said he wants to let communities create registries of dangerous dogs to help police and emergency workers.

"Every newspaper article about another attack only reinforces that we have to do something,'' he said.

:p  :banghead: or :fire: ... I can't decide

The rhetoric of fear never changes.

"Killing machines."

"Weapon of choice for drug dealers and gangbangers."

The proposed law, of course, is named after some hapless child.

It would be pretty funny if it weren't so sad.

I loathe people who keep dogs. They are cowards who haven't go the guts to bite people themselves. -- August Strindberg

Rottweilers can be the most gentle dogs

When properly trained. But in the wrong hands they certainly can be dangerous. Don't ban the dogs, ban the creeps who misuse them. Rottweilers were carefully genetically modified for 2,000 years in Germany, to be personal/family bodyguards, cattle guards, and to be good with children. It takes American jerks to mistreat and maybe mis-breed such fine animals. We have owned rotties for over 20 years and they are good family pets and have never done wrong.

"Is that a pit bull in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

Mae West....'course, Mae said "gun", not "pit bull"....hey! It's a stinkin' joke...get over it.

Oh, our first male, "Boris" did do one thing wrong

I think he was a little bit ticked off at me for some reason, and I left him as usual in the house in Cali and headed to work. I made the mistake of leaving my FAVORITE Banana Republic cotton concealment vest on the couch. He must have thought it looked tasty, :uhoh: because he literally ate half of it. I mean right down the center. He relieved himself of it, zipper and all the next day :scrutiny: These are my favorite vests and until recently they were not made (Banana Republic went yuppie) The only ones you could get were 50/50 poly/cotton. But I found a new supplier and now sell a reasonable replica in 100% cotton. Anyway it would have been funny except it was my fave carry vest.:fire:

Mrs. AZLib has 5 dogs that total all of 35 pounds. Should I expect to hear about the 'arsenal' in our house? Ooops. Nevermind. I already hear about arsenals, but she's talking about what's in the gun safe, not in the dog crate.:D

Politicians: It would be easy to make fun of them, if they didn't parody themselves. Its good to see that the Nanny State lives!!

Their are times for a sword, and there are people who need their heads lopped off. We have found a candidate.

I never cease to get sick when I see stuff like this, they never blame the humans for doing the wrong. its always a dog or a gun. I've seen golden retrivers who where more visious than any pit bull or rottwiler its how a dog is raised/treated not its breed. I had a pitbull when I was kid she was the most gentle dog you'd ever want to meet. I also had a german shpeperd/doberman mix and she was a sweetheart to,this B.S. of blaming dogs/gun and any other crap for the misdoings of men needs to stop.

If these freedoms we take for granted keep getting whittled away at... pretty soon "civil disobedience" will be commonplace.

Is it unethical to disobey unjust laws?

It's just Common Sense Dog Control Laws that we want.....
You don't want YOUR child mauled by an Assault Dog, now do you?

Don't worry - we'd NEVER come after your Hunting Dogs.....

Oh goody! Now that the drug dealers and gangbangers don't use guns anymore, maybe we will get left alone.

Mizzoutiger

You know that was a rhetorical question and that the answer is that it is IMMORAL and unethical to NOT defend your family and your liberty.

Hey, I wonder how long it will be before they use the "cop-killer" dog rhetoric?

Do it for the cops and the kids :barf:

Jesus wept.

Do these leftist clowns ever even CONSIDER blaming the person and not the instrument?

Good point, TheEgg. Don't count on it.

I really cannot fathom a mindset that wants to ban dogs.

You mean the ones that allow a bloodthirsty and privilaged elite to slaughter defenceless animals for "sport"?

Yep - those are the dogs I'm talking about. Except for one little point.... You are obviously thinking of the English Fox Hunts. Over here, poor country folk use dogs to run coon and boar. Everyday folk use dogs to bring back duck, geese, and other fowl.

Not everyone sees killing their own food as being bloodthirsty, or the running of dogs as the sport of the social elite.

. . . vicious dogs . . . are becoming ``the weapon of choice for drug dealers or gangbangers.''
HOORAY! Since Fido is now "the weapon of choice" I guess we don't have to worry about more bans on GUNS, right?
. . . bar . . . felons from owning . . . any vicious dog over 10 pounds.
Un-oh . . . anti-gunners don't like compact handguns in large calibers, calling them "pocket rockets." Sounds like they left a loophole here for "pocket pooches."

Seriously, the inmates ARE running the asylum.
