Socal THR Meet: A Weekend of Tacticality!

Okay, if it's 3-gun ya want, West End West End Gun Club is the place - the regular Every 4th Saturday 3-Gun is mucho fun and interesting. Usually 6 to 8 stages, with one rifle stage at 200 to 300 yards (we have to close off all the pistol bays to shoot 600 yard, so that's out for 3 gun.)

Generally 15 to 20 people show up, but twice that still makes for relatively small squads. The match schedule, directions, and a phone contact are all on the web site. I use my M1A, Mossy 590A1 and Kimber, but you can be Uebertactical or bring a bolt or lever gun, I've seen kids (teens) running .22s and .410s; the rules are vaguely IPSC but outside of Safety First the only real rule is Have Fun! :D

Skunk, waddya think? West End is only 20 minutes further than Raahauge's from OC on Saturday mornings, and the fees are cheaper. It would be Saturday, 7/26.

It also tends to be cooler than Norco (higher elevation) and WAY less dusty  ya still need to hydrate well and bring the sun block, of course.

Oh, there's damn fine potable well water on site as an added bonus.

I like the looks of that three gun match. I would be willing to do that one. Only thing is I have to go to the Producers that day for the wife's birthday. That might be a good cover to get her down there, but I don't know if I could get over to the Pantages by 1400 hours. I will see. I am all for that shoot, I just might have to wait until August. Good call.

What we are about to discuss here, must stay here. I need a vow of secrecy from all good shooters that browse this thread. Do I have it? Ok, well if you read on then that is a yes.

My wife is a drama major, her birthday is July 28th (Monday), and she wants nothing more than to go to The Producers.. I told her we can't afford it and we aren't going. Well I am a liar. I have had the tickets for a couple months. Here is where all of you come in to play.

The Saturday 7/26 Three Gun Match sounds like it will be fun. Secondly, it is the perfect cover to get my wife down to Los Angeles and make her still think we aren't going to the play. Now if I told her where I was taking her was a surprise, as soon as we hit I-5 south, she would know. Now if I tell her that I want to go to a three gun match and then take her somewhere nice to eat in LA afterwards, she might suspect it is a lie and she will probably really be hoping that I take her to the Pantages theatre instead. Well when we roll up to the West End Gun Club to shoot a three gun match, I think she is pretty much going to lose hope.

So, if I shoot a three gun match and leave there by about 1200 noon, will that two hours be enough to get me to the Pantages Theatre off Hollywood Blvd. from out there in the sticks? I am figuring with traffic problems, it would take the full two hours. I am thinking on a Saturday at noon, it might only take one hour to an hour and a half. What do you guys think?

Now there is a chance the three gun might not be over by noon, oh well. I would just have to leave early. So what do you think? Will it work? The only downside is to get to the gun range from Taft by 0930, I am going to have to leave about 0600 to 0630! What fun. I think this is going to work. I am excited. Three gun, big time off-broadway comedy, and meeting all of you in the same day.

Ok, so if any of you show up to the three gun that day, YOU KNOW NOTHING!!! Let me repeat, YOU KNOW NOTHING! I was going to not tell anyone here for fear of it getting out, but I was too excited about the whole plan. So once again, if we show up, mention nothing about later that day. I might tell you I am taking my wife out to dinner later, but you know nothing about plays, theatre, or The Producers. Thanks guys. Let me know what you think about my time estimates from The West End Gun Club to Hollywood Blvd and the 101.

The West End matches are kinda laid back - after orientation and a walk through of the stages (except for an occasional 'mystery stage' which is unknown to the shooter 'til you get into it  ) actual start time is usually about 10AM, so we usually end up going until 2 or 3 PM - you'd still get most of the stages done, and nobody mids people "jumping squads" for special urgencies (yours would qualify, i think :D .) We do try to start earlier during the hot months :fire:

Oh, and buck is okay for the steel, though they'd prefer birdshot; bring a few slugs along, too, there's usually a couple of paper targets at longer range for those.

Just don't hit the steel with a slug or you buy the steel :cuss:

Red,

It'll take you a little over an hour to get there from WEGC. The main thing is to STAY OFF the 10!!!

You'll want to take the 15 south to the 210 west. The 210 west becomes the 134 in Pasadena. You then have the option of taking surface streets from the 134, or taking the 5 to the 101, or taking the 134 (which becomes the 170) to the 101 and back-tracking south.

Personally, I'd take surface streets through Griffith Park. It's a nice leisurely ride (at least it used to be... haven't been in a couple of years) and will make your wife think you're trying to be romantic to make up for the fact that she's not getting to see the Producers. :D You'll end up out on Los Feliz and can take that to Western, and then to Hollywood Blvd, where you'll make a right.

Good luck, man. I may or may not see you at the range. I'm a one gun man for the time being.

Sure thing - but I wanna try out yer P7M8, even if it is a mere 9mm

Sigh. My second biggest regret (gun-related: there ARE a few other regrets  ) is passing on a P9S in .45ACP for $600 about 20 years ago. :(

Biggest regret is selling my HK91A 10 years ago to raise cash to try to save a condo. The condo was foreclosed anyway, and while I have another house now, I'll never have another [PRK legal, at least  ] G3 type. :cuss:

ANYWAY. So are we on for West End on the 26th, for Raahauge's this weekend, or both? Inquiring Minds Gots To Know!? :scrutiny:

Thanks Gorrilla. I will map it out in detail. As far as the story goes, I broke the news to the wife today and she said okay. She seemed like she was less than enthused however she accepted it, so this thing is going great.

I will be brining my M1A, 870P, and my .45ACP. If anyone wants to shoot any of those, they may feel free. I also have a Taurus 9mm, an M1 Garand, and a SKS that if someone needs lender guns, they can use those too. I guess the only thing is bring your own ammo or buy it from me. Heck, for .308 I have enough I might just let you use it. I think there can be enough guns there for everyone. Just let us know what extra we need to bring. Lets have a grand time of it.

Hey, I've got a case of .30-06 for just in case the CMP doesn't get my Garand to me in a timely manner!

But yeah, I'll be in Norco on the 13th and WEGC on the 26. This is gonna be awesome!

Oh yeah, if any of y'all have digital cameras or camcorders, bring them! We have to show the other THRers what SoCal is all about!

OK who's comin' on Sunday 7/13? Sound off!!!

RREEEEEEEEHAAAWWWWWWWWWW!

Umm...post yer pics too how am I gonna find you guys.

Kevlarman, you need a Garand for the match on the 26th? Let me know. You can shoot mine if you want. It really isn't a problem. Besides, if you break it, I just get to keep yours when it comes in.

Skunk, we all know what you look like. So we will find you! Besides, there can't be too many Asians there can there? :scrutiny:

what if you only have one gun, and it's a 2-inch S&W M19, and you can't even shoot that 'cause you're underage? Maybe I could make it to lunch and dinner, though.

Skunk knows me but here ya go anyway:

Actually El Rojo, if you make it out on Saturdays for IPSC you can't get around unless you know Tagalog :D

Is La Roja shooting with us?

I got an e-mail back from the guy who runs the match:
We don't discourage bolt action weapons we do not allow steel core ammo.
Some of the rifle courses are 20 - 30 rounds each. My suggestion is if
someone has a .223 buy their own ammo and share the weapon. We normally run
1 or 2 rifle courses.

Handgun is 100 - 200 rounds

Shotgun - 25 rounds bird or buck - 5 rifled slugs

See you there

tcdrennan saw me in my very lethargic sleepy unskunky self on last Sunday. Man I was so tired!!! I was pretty antisocial and dehydrated. If I knew I was gonna run into some THR members out there I woulda worn my LBV or at the very least my drop leg holster for added tacticality. I have an image to uphold as a HSLD operator and I blew it :p

(TLE....TLE....mine.....TLE....)

Man, I am personally offended by that buy some .223 comment. If I can't get the job done with my M1A, then there is no point in even owning it. I look at three gun as more of a get better to shoot what you got thing. Besides, I want to do better with my M1A than some of the poodle shooters. I need to start practicing reloads again.

Speaking of which, Skunk what do you use to keep your extra rifle mags in during the match? I have a web belt with four 2 mag Israeli type pouches on it, but is that over kill? Will everyone label me as uber-tactical? I do have a few single mag pouches I could put on a belt. Suggestions? I might just use that since that is what I would throw on if I ended up defending the neighborhood against the hords of OC Asian tactical bandits that threaten our sleepy way of life. :D

My main concern is that I carry my Glock 27 all the time. Even though it is a shorty, I would like to shoot that. However, I have no ammo for it right now (other than like 800 rounds of Hydro-Shoks). I do have my 1911 .45 ACP and plenty of ammo for it. My holster for the 1911 is not all that great either, I bought a paddle for some odd reason. I think I will end up using the 1911 anyway.

I'll be there (what time again?).

Any plans for afterward?

Jato, I have some .223, 55 gr FMJ remans from Miwall. I'll have my .30-06, so I probably won't need your AR, but just in case, are those OK?

Coincidentally, I look like El Rojo.
