I started a thread last week with the question:
How do weapons get the SOCOM name attached to them.

It was clearly researched that H&K's Mark 23 was the only one that was made for Special Forces, but I couldn't find any info on Springfield's SOCOM 16. I emailed Springfield and recieved a response today that reads:

Hi Sean – The socom was named for more of a marketing ploy. We cannot give an official word as to whether the SOF’s are using these rifles.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - Tom

There you go fellas, staight from the horse's mouth. You have to give them credit for their honesty.

If it sounds cool, it will sell. If it sound really cool, it will sell really well.

That's pretty funny that they'd admit it. I guess you'd probably get the same answer if you asked about their "Tactical Combat Black Stainless" 1911. As much as I dislike the name, I want to get the gun

maybe there's going to be a shift from "Tactical" everything to "SOCOM" everything. i think "Tactical" has worn out its welcome.

That's awesome! I love the honesty. Why try to give some dumb, BS reason. Marketing is a fact of life for any successful company..no need to hide it.

I am glad that he was honest. I feel that one should build a solid arsenal. The flavor of the month might be fun for experimentation, but seldom last. Besides you can always upgrade your arms from your enemy's supplies. Tactics, not tactical carry the day!

Specially Overly Commercialized Obnoxiously Marketed

Try your hand at decoding the SOCOM name!

I got it
