Soldiers Finding WWII Weapons in Iraq

Mortars for longer range, rockets for medium range

sorry, but you got that backwards. maybe you meant RPG? 107mm rockets have a much more significant range than our 120mm mortar systems. the 240mm's? :what: forget it! too far out to even call in air support!

with that said, there IS something to be said about the lacking of the M4! if i could have, i'd have snagged one of the few M14's floating around here, mucho more firepower than any 5.56 could be. or at least an M16A4

5.56 is lacking in penetration of cars, too. 7.62 = quite effective, IMHO.

I never found any WWII weapons over there, but I did find a ton of German K98 ammo, Wehrmacht eagle stamped on the case-head.

Makes we remember a story a Gulf War vet in my unit told me.
He found a Dragunov sniper rifle over there; still in its velvet lined box.
He tried to ship it back to the states by hiding it on a Bradley but it wouldn't fit into the space he was hiding it in by a few inches.
Eventually an officer got hold of it and he never saw it again.
It hurt just listening to the story at the time. That would've been a primo war trophy.
