So I decided to go a different direction. I built a custom rifle for my son to present to him on his 13 or 14th birthday as a "coming of age" gift. It's so custom, the serial number is his initials and birthday. It is currently wearing a Leupold VX-III (not 3 or 3i) 4.5-14x40 with a simple crosshair reticle. It all looks great, but the 20 MOA base on the rifle doesn't allow a 100 yard zero. It has to be a 200 yard zero because it doesn't have enough adjustment. I'm unhappy with this situation, so I ordered a Tract Optics Toric 3-15x42 with a BDC to put on his rifle which should be able to fill the role much better and I plan on moving the Leupold over to the 30-06. I've measured the space on the scope tube and there is enough space to mount it on the long action. It won't look right since the scope is stainless, but it will be a better fit for function. I won't be dialing the scope on the 30-06, so it will be "set and forget". I'll see how it goes...
