Some old paper shells

A couple years ago I bought 20 old paper 12 gauge shells at an antique store. There was a 410 in there as well. I got them out of the safe today. After a bit of online searching I found that some of these are pretty old. This is the oldest I think. Winchester Repeater. If what I'm reading is accurate, these were made between 1896 and 1938. Is there any way to tell if any of these have collector value?

Not any significant amount. IMO
I've seen them at shows for 3$ -5$ per round, and they don't sell.
Other than that, i have No clue, possibly check Gunbroker and see if/what anything is selling.....

I’ll never forget the delicious smell of Federal paper shells.

That is one of my favorite smells of all time. I still have a box of pap's old 2 9/16" Winchester 16 gauge shells and shoot one occasionally out of his old M37 Winchester, usually at something that shouldn't be in my garden. Pity they don't make them anymore, they remind me of better times.

Grown up in the era with plastic shotgun shells I sometimes wish we would go back to paper so that way people leave them behind in the woods or on the range they're at least biodegradable. I know they're not as sturdy as the plastic shotgun shells so it'll probably never happen.

I have not checked in a while. Ebay had used paper hulls in bulk for not a lot of money. A few years ago, I bought a thousand. Maybe half were usable. I use them still.
PS: just checked ebay…nothing.
Checked Gunbroker….if you are interested, hulls are available.

Go back to paper hulls? Federal still makes paper shotshells.

Federal still makes new shells with a paper hull. Remington has reintroduced the Peters line. Sellior &Beloit still make one as does Rio. I'll find some of the old Winchester every once in a while at our club

1963...last time I used paper hulls...went dove and rabbit hunting with Western Auto 12 ga 2 1/2 purple hull. Smell was from the wax used to impregnate the paper.

Do you remember Western Auto?
I know that Western was an ammunition brand, I think under Remington? I have two boxes of .22 Long from Western. I dunno, i have a small vintage ammo collection.

Western was a division of Winchester; Western Auto had their own brand of guns and ammunition sold under the Revelation brand. Several companies such as Marlin, Remington, and Winchester-Western manufactured guns and ammo for them.

I have hundreds of rounds of such things, in original boxes. I've had them for years, and haven't figured out what to do with them. They'd make great decoration, but most members of my social circle aren't shooters.

The glass cases at the gun rental counter at Bud's gun range have them for decoration. But they already have all they need.

It's too bad that we all don't live conveniently near each other. We could have some sort of shoot using old ammo (I have old rifle ammo in addition to old shotgun ammo....)

$3 to $5 would be gold. More like .25 cents to a dollar each. There are people that collect old ammo, but shotshells are not really big on their list unless they are really unusual. A full box of unfired shells with the box having an animal or a hunting scene on the front without price stickers or handwritten prices written them is what collectors are looking for.

Late '60s, the local hardware store was closing down. Papa and I went in to see if he had any .22 shells. He sold me 5 boxes of Revelation paper hull, black powder, 20ga 6s for $2. I have 5 or 6 shells left. Such a blast to rabbit hunt with. Reloaded with Black once or twice.
Sold an empty box, that was in extremely good condition, for $26 on eBay. Another for $15.

The boxes get collected, the shells, not so much.

A dear friend who just passed away recently used to reload Federal paper shells all the time.

When they got too frayed he would throw them away.

He gave me a box of his frayed shells a few years ago.

I had not thought about it until just now.

I should see if I can find the box and see if I can reload them, perhaps with Black Powder.

Our small town had a “Western Auto” 25 years ago.

Before you load them, check them for pinhole burns at the top of the brass. They usually get them after 3-5 reloads.

I have a Western Auto Revelation (Mossberg 500A). It's the first long gun I ever bought at 17 years old, started off as a long 28" fixed mod choke field gun with wood furniture but I've since turned it into a home defense gun and after almost 15 years and lots of 3" magnum shells its still going strong.... single action bar and has never given me any troubles
