Ok. Someone please help me understand. 5 Weeks ago I buy my first handgun a SR1911 by Ruger at Shoot Straight in Florida. Took it home loved it.. 2 weeks after that I bought a Remington 870 from Take Aim in Florida. Took it home loved it...2 weeks later I get my CWP issued from Florida. Awesome..

I am so excited the following week (today)I get to now buy my first Carry Pistol. A Springfield EMP which I have been waiting for. So, I go to Shoot Straight and lay down $1100 OTD so excited I cant stand myself I slap down my CWP and DL only to get a CONDITIONAL on the BACKGROUND!!! My excitement and joy just came to a tumbling hault...I drove 60 miles ONLY to have to wait for 5 days..

What the heck is this all about??? Can someone help me. I did not use my SS# cause i do not like to let anyone have it on paper.l My name is Polish so its very rare.

My dad has same name.. He is 59 and I am 38. So the age is different. Does anyone know why this has happened and or help me understand??

Thank you in advance.

I don't know for sure, maybe someone can chime in that does, but it sounds like perhaps you purchased enough in a one month period to warrant a flag? Maybe they just want to see if you've bought a lot in the past at once?

Do a search on this forum for denied. There you will find several threads about people who have experienced the same thing you are experiencing along with ways to deal with this.

One thing you need to do when you can is to get your own PIN number for future use.

Good Luck

Edit: Actually try NICS denied and then choose show threads.

that's why you should use your SS# so you don't find yourself confused with someone else.

Happened to me. Was not conditional but A do not sell. Took A week to straighten out. Needed new fingerprints and some paperwork. Been A long time can't remember what all I had to provide. I have bought many guns since with no problem. It will work out for you. Good luck!

I bought 5 pistols last month and I never put down my ssn on the background check, never been denied. This is in Alabama, Maybe because of the uncommon last name?

I started to revolt once on the SS# thing....and decided, it has went smooth for years doing it that way..(before so much Identity theft)...Why rock the boat now??

I have thought that maybe it would be better to apply for the UPIN, but some are of the opinion to wait until there is a problem...then get it!

I dont Know....been using SS# all year so far!

What are you going to buy 2 weeks from today... and 2 weeks after that...?

I'm envious of your lifestyle!

THIS

I see it all the time with regular customers- pass with ssn / delay without. Each NICS examiner looks over the buyers record while the dealer waits on the phone. If you John Smith dont write down a social the examiner wont know that you're not the John Smith in the next town over that hit his wife last week... The NICS examiner will then pass the dealer on to the FBI for a more detailed check. It's the FBI that mostly decides Proceed, Delay, or Denied. Sometimes they want more time to research you and that's how you get a delay. Often times they can call back within hours or a few days... Even a few times they have called right back as the customer was driving out of the lot! In my state if someone with a CPL gets delayed and then OK'd they dont have to wait the 5 days (we usually give the customer a call)

if you look on the form it says "optional"

in florida its a background check when buying from a FFL...the only thing a CWP gets you is no wait period on handguns from FFL (normally)

Probably your name, they will probably only need your last 4 to discern you from the rest.

Maybe because of the uncommon last name?

Very possible. If my father doesn't use his SSN# he gets denied. A local felon has the same first name, last name, and middle initial. An uncommon name does help get through the hoops.

Or someone with the same first and last name, whether common or not, is a very bad person. I don't know how approximate any of the state agencies that involve themselves in firearms approvals or NICS go, but I know when you run a guy through NCIC checking for out of state or federal wants and warrants it is not uncommon to get return hits that are a bit puzzling because they computer thought the info was "close" (i.e. run a Hispanic name and your returns include Muslim terror suspects who are on various watch lists, etc.).

The NICS check is usually "denied, approved, or delayed". Never heard of conditional?

Mine has been delayed a few times because the system was down, they were backed up or I didn't use my SS#. If they "delay" without a "deny" you may pick your gun up in a few days.

I've called in plenty of NICS checks where the purchaser didn't put down an SSN. The purchaser is delayed (and usually frustrated, mad, etc). I ask for the SSN, call the check back in, and usually it gets approved immediately.

Is the SSN supposed to be used for ID? Under Federal law, no. Doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

FWIW the OP is correct to protect his SSN. I've said many times that if I were a crook, I wouldn't steal guns from a shop, I'd sell photocopies of the first two pages of the 4473 to ID thieves, as you'd be less likely to be caught, prosecuted, or serve jail time. I think you'd also net more...

It's got to be something else. My FFL actually advised me not to put down my SS number and I've never had a problem. Also, filling out the form requires a full middle name, so unless you have an extremely common full name, name confusion seems unlikely.
