I am having trouble finding a modern rifle that has the following: 1) iron sights 2) a 3 position safety or 2 position safety that locks the bolt 3) long action. So far I have only found the Savage Euro Classic 114 I was hoping to find a mauser action and saw that Remington is stocking some of the old Charles Daly Zastava mauser actions but the safety does not lock the bolt. I guess I never should have sold my Winchester model 70...

Doesn't Ruger use an actual bolt safety on the 77 line with that swing around bolt lock? I think they have a long action also.

I have a Ruger M77 MkII it is based on a Mauser action. It has a 3 postion saftey that locks the bolt. Shoots sub MOA to.

Ruger's site shows only two model M77 variants with iron sights. The first is a Magnum, which comes in .375 H&H and the like, and the second is a Mannlicher 18" barrel length, which comes in .243, .270, .30-06 and one other that I can't remember...

Anyway, Ruger is a master at marketing, and you may have to have a gunsmith put iron sights on a M77 if you want a standard barrel length .30-06, for example.

Yeah I like the CZ550, the only one w/ sights is the FS which is too nice to bang around in the woods and slightly over budget, no offense to anyone but I am no fan of Ruger. I think the Savage is the only one I have seen so far to my liking. Even that is kinda spendy at over $650.

Would you consider a lever gun? You can get any caliber you want from Marlin including their new .308 Marlin Express. (different than the .308 Win)

The Kimber rifles are semi- model 70 clones...
The same for the rifles from the Montana Rifle compnay.

You can install a bolt shroud 3 position safety (M-70 type) on a CZ bolt.

The M-77 MKII saftey is actually mounted in the receiver and is not really the same as a M-70 safety. BUT, it does swing into a detent in the rear cocking piece and hold the firing pin when fully applied to the last position. However, it only blocks the trigger in the mid-position and not the firing pin.

I added sights to my 350 rem Mag M-77MKII, using a quick detachable rear peep , along with warne quick detach rings for the 2 x 7 Leupold scope.
I used a fiber-glass rod front sight bead and drilled holes at random through the sight hood to let in light for those semi dark walks back to camp.
It is a stainless rifle, but I baked on some high temp ceramic paint. It might come off every now and then, but the rest of the can is out in the shop...

For what ever reason it seems like they discontinued the LUX and now only sell the Full Stock Bavarian Mannlicher style. IMHO this is even better. Folks get excellent accuracy out of these. I do not have any CZ full size caliber CF's but do have 3 CZ 527's and two Brno ZKK series CF rifles. (Which the 550 is a direct licensed copy of.) I also have a .300 Win Mag on the way as we speak...I wished it was available in FS. LOVE EM! I also love the single set trigger on them which to me is also worth another $200-$250 in value. Again do not let the FS fool you as they are just as accurate as their open barrel brothers. In general CZ probably makes the biggest bang for the buck on the market and even more so on the FS. Here is some info and pics to peruse.

CZ 550 embodies aesthetic elegance and ergonomic design. On closer inspection the heart of the machine shows its time honored features.

· Mauser style claw extractor
· Square bridge receiver
· Hammer forged barrel
· Single set trigger

The Mauser style claw extractor for positive loading and extraction, and compact trigger mechanism which can be used as a single stage or a single set trigger. The CZ 550 has a positive 2-position safety. All CZ 550's feature a classic square bridge receiver with a 19mm dovetail milled right into the receiver for the mounting of optics. For accuracy and long life these rifles are fitted with hammer forged barrels.

At the Cabela's gun counter last week, I was told that Remington is now re-selling CZ rifles in the US. Per the agreement, many of the CZ models are no longer available.

The Remington versions do not have the set trigger.

I love that CZ with the full stock. I also like my rifles to have iron sights and a 3-position safety.

A Savage Scout is another option.

That's odd, Remington has an exclusive US distribution agreement with Zastava for the Remington 798 and 799 rifle lines. CZ-USA is likely to be surprized if Remington has put them out of business.

Yea, you should have kept your Winchester! That said you can get a New mauser Action and have it barreled for whatever caliber you like. Otherwise the Ruger would get my money.

The CZ rifles are just super. You have to take one apart and look at the attention to detail and precision these rifles embody.

Yeah I love those CZs. Now someone tell me if this is true, thier .308 is chambered on thier LONG action?! thus not letting you have the benefit of the short throw and weight savings (although minimal) of a short action?
