At a summer campout, when we went to the BB range the boys would turn in their targets for scoring and if they got the correct score would be awarded a patch. I looked into it even more and found that it is something that we can go over in our den meetings. I am glad to be able to share a lifelong pastime with young scouts!!! It is sad that I can not run the actual shoot as a den event but I can give the targets to the parents to do with their child. If they don’t have a bb gun, all they have to do is come by my house and I am sure that my son will let them use his.

We got registered with them and they sent out lots of pamphlets about safety, shooting sports and targets that we hand out to the parents and we can go over the safety rules in the den meetings with the parents and kids!!!!!

I am a wolf den leader!!

Sad that you can't actually have shoots as events. I remember when I was in scouts (early 90's), one of the highlights was going shooting with my troop.

At least in Boy Scouts they still do have "shootouts". I owe it to Boy Scouts for setting me on the right path with firearms. I'm still grateful to "Mr. K" who was my rifle and shotgun shooting merit badge teacher for teaching me the basics of firearms and firearm responsibility. Everything he taught me I use several times a week when I go hunting and to the range.

As soon as I add Rifle to my NRA Instructor cert I intend to offer intros to groups like this. Heck - even an abbreviated course with Red Ryders might have some value for the younger ones.

In addition to BSA

I'm not going to disparage the BSA for not letting you run shoots yourself, but have you considered, in addition to BSA, getting the boys involved in 4H? I think they still have rifle clubs. Maybe not, it's been a while. I was a boy scout and my wife was in 4H. Both many moons ago.

Shooters

The more people that shoot the better. There is STATE money available for 4-H. You just have to have someone to run the program. It's a direct hit on the liberal culture that has taken over the public school systems everywhere.

They ought to be shooting air rifle in the gym or cafeteria as a PE option.

Join your state association. Join the NRA. Join the GOA or the SAF or the JFPFO. If you already are a member then start ramping up to the Life Membership level. They are going to hang us separately if we don't hang together, in fact-they nearly have us on the gallows now.

There are also a cubscout BB shooting pin and a belt loop that can be earned at a cubscout camp shooting event under the supervision of a certified scout range officer.

I've always found the Scouts to be very open to shooting sports, but they are fanatical about safety and about supervision by properly trained leaders.

My son's cub scout pack is a pretty informal group. We hold our meetings in the 2nd floor of an old sporting goods store that one of the cubmasters owns. Its set up as an archery range. We shoot bows and BB guns at our pack meetings from time to time. Its nice that all us dads are hunters and shooters.

Right now we are in the middle of a woodworking project to build BB traps. Once they're done. We'll give the kids some time to practice at home then a match sounds like a good idea.

You can still get away with doing shoots with BB guns and Bow and Arrow in Cubs, WEBELOS, and Boy Scouts, BUT to even thinnk about it you must be certified with the Boy Scouts to be able to Teach BB or Bow and Arrow or hold a fun shoot.

I was planing in going to pow wow on the 2nd of DEC to get BB trained. I have been working with the guy at the boy scouts home office to get the rules changed so That I can hold the events as a den activity. So long as I get the needed training. As the rule reads now (in TN) I don't know if it is different where you live. No BB or bow events can be held as a pack or den event. If I was to hold such an event and someone got injured the BSA insurance would not be in effect. That would leave me holding the bag for all medical costs.

All of my boys have their BB and archery belt loops and pins.

It's not just rifles and BB guns. My local range host a group of boy scouts/explorer scouts each spring for clay pigeon shooting. We provide the facilities and shotguns and they provide the ammo and birds. Great fun.

FYI to qualify for a merit badge you must break 25/50 clay pigeons. We found that 50 shots in one day was a bit much for young shooters, so we now spread the shooting over two days.

In my county they have a shoot every year where teenagers can bring all thier guns and ammo and shoot thier own guns and everyone elses. And even if your not in the troop you can come, thats what I do I have no interest in joining I just go and shoot all day:D
