Hi all,

Im wondering if anyone knows a source to buy black powder in the Kansas City area. The last time I stocked up was a few years ago and apparently I bought the last cans our Bass Pro had. I've tried other Cabelas and Bass Pro etc. and none seem to carry the real stuff anymore. I'm not a big fan of pyrodex and would prefer to avoid hazmat fees from buying online. I've considered making my own but don't think I'm ready for that yet. I usually shoot Goex FF-FFFF out of a few flintlock muskets and C&B revolvers I have. I didn't realize it was getting so hard to find anymore and it's really got me scratching my head. Graf and Sons is about three hours from here and worst case I could probably make the drive but don't want to waste time if there's something closer. Thank you in advance and any help would be greatly appreciated!

From Powder, Inc, and about a dozen other master distributors of GOEX around the country, you can order in a minimum of five pounds and have it shipped right to your door. Yes, you pay for shipping and HazMat; weigh that against gas and wear on the vehicle for a round trip to get it.

The more you buy, the cheaper the pound of powder. From Powder, Inc., my source, (www.powderinc.com) order five pounds and GOEX is about $29/lb. Order ten pounds, and GOEX is about $23.00/lb. Order twenty-five pounds and GOEX is about $18.50/lb. These prices include shipping and HazMat. Share the order with your friends, and lighten the financial load.

Good luck finding it locally, probably over $30 per pound. To sell black powder, stores have to have more than an FFL. They are required to have a FEL, which doubles the inspection visits from the ATF. The local Fire Marshal can also lock out black powder sales in their area.

As shown in the link above, Graf and Sons does the same kind of deal as Powder Inc. but they only charge $20 for a haz-mat fee. Most others charge $28. They sell their own brand of powder too which is re-labeled Schuetzen and it is on a par with Goex. They sell Goex, Old Eynsford and Swiss too.

Jeez, <cough>, I thought BP was supposed to be cheap! I can almost get BH209 for that! Pyrodex is a bargain.

Thank you all for the replies! From the looks of it it seems that online is the way to go! I’ve never bought powder online and was thinking the hazmat fee applied to each can but if it’s flat rate for all it certainly seems worth it to buy in bulk. I’ve always used Goex but I think I may try Graf’s powder. I don’t hunt with my Muzzleloaders so I’m sure it will be fine to plink around with.

Only thing cheap about black powder is the guns, when they are on sale.
Aint that the truth. At an average load of 25 grains, weight, a pound will only give you 280 shots, by volume not much difference On the other hand my range secessions with cap and ball will average 60 shots fired compared to a like 200 shots or more with metallic ammo. And black powder is way more fun.

Don’t get into paper cartridges or you may find yourself shooting about that much too! It’s nearly as quick as loading a single action cartridge gun.

I made some to try when a few of my friends quickly lost interest with the slow loading process.

I can see how quick it was with the paper cartridges. Each box came with six cartridges and six percussion caps. This replica box of paper cartridges would be a little bulky to carry in a vest or shirt pocket, however. In a coat definitely but in the summer heat I don't know how you would carry them outside your saddle bags.

These "cartridges" came from Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, NY. It is the oldest US arsenal still operating.

I believe it was Omnivore on the 1858 forum who made a wooden cartridge carrier for his belt that held enough to defend a hill until reinforcements could show up. Also had a six pack holder that he said was about as big as a pack of cigarettes but thinner. Easily fits in a pocket.

I bought a leather pouch from DD4lifeusmc that would hold that I’d guess that fits the gun belt I bought from him.

Yeah it seems ordering online is much more hassle free. I’ve definitely run into going to a shop and they don’t have the right powder or maybe only one or two cans. It gets pretty frustrating! Plus that’s wasted time I could be spending on the range! I used to make cartridges for my pistols but gave up because I went through powder so fast, it’d be nice to do that again. I’ve never made them for my rifles but I’m considering buying a Brown Bess musket soon so I may have to give that a shot as well. Again, thank you all for the advice! I was getting pretty frustrated trying to find powder but things are certainly looking up now!

Tried rolling my own, several methods, memo to self, one of the reasons I started black powder shooting, load as you go, get away from the loading bench, especially the bullet sizing and lubing.

For people in CAS or NMLRA these online sellers are perfect for them as they go through so much powder in practicing and in competition. I shoot my 1860 Army repro at least twice a week during the spring and summer for hunting or range time and 5 pounds of powder will last me awhile.

But what's even more important is I can finally buy Olde Eynsford or Swiss that I could never find locally in case I want to experiment with different loads.

I’m a bit torn myself. Making them was interesting and I certainly see the advantage of them such as hunting where I can leave the flask and measure behind giving myself both an easier and faster way to reload without concerns of wind making it hard to pour into the chamber. But at the same time I enjoy loading as I go at the range.

I have saved a bunch of tins that small cigars come in as storage.

You mentioned the Kansas City area...

June 7-8-9 the Prince Of Pistoleers cowboy action match will be held at Hodgdon’s Powder Creek shooting range in Lenexa, KS. There will be vendors at the range, and I would expect some will have blackpowder for sale. I think your best bet is to order a case online, but if you only want a can or two, this would be a possibility. At least you would enjoy seeing a cowboy action match! Visitors are welcome (wear eye protection) and there is no gate fee.

The last BP I bought was from Powderinc. I bought 25 pounds because two shooting friends wanted to split the cost. When it got here they pretty much backed out of the deal and left me with about 20 of the 25 pounds.I was sort of miffed about that but now I am glad they did. With that part of the case plus what I already had on hand I had a good store of powder.

Now several years later I am looking to restock and am shocked at how much it has gone up in price. I could buy the substitute for maybe a little less but I just like real BP better.

And I remember all the Mike Venturino articles about how cheap it was to shoot BP. Not any more. With an average 70gr load that’s 100 shots per pound in a rifle. A 308 with a 45gr load will get 135 shots per pound. But BP sure is fun.

Recommend you call each store and see if they actually have it in stock and what is the price per pound.
