The start of the next school year, I'm probably going to end up in the Chicago area (yeah, yeah, I hear the collective groan) for graduate school. I currently live in OH and own several firearms (a 9mm and an AR15 among them). I've done some brief searching for IL and Chicago guns laws, but all i found were some generalized ones. I did see that firearms need to be registered in Chicago. How does this process work for someone moving from out of the state? What happens if I choose to remain an OH resident and merely live in IL for the two years of grad school?

Thanks for any help.

Chicago Municipal Code. You want chapter 4. (Actually, 4 only has the requirement to get a permit to purchase; all of the other entertaining provisions are in 8, as Gator [in Cook County, IL] points out - thanks, Gator.)

Illinois State Rifle Association.

Remember, Chicago says
The City supports the broadest possible additional measures to restrict the importation, manufacture, sales and possession of firearms and ammunition.

If at all possible live outside of cook county and take the train to school. Handguns in s---cago is a no way no how same with your ar. Even a student may need a foid but maybe not if you maintain your residence as Ohio. Above all KEEP YOUR OHIO drivers license. You will not be able to carry but you will be able to buy ammo. If you HAVE to live in Soddom on the lake then leave your firearms in Ohio.

Actually, for the Chicago Municipal Code, chapter eight deals with registration. I think it is a lot more trouble than it is worth. If you have to be in Cook County, at least make it a suburb, some even allow assault weapons! (At least they do today). What school are you going to?

Thanks for all the help. It does seem like almost more trouble than its worth. I need to wait to hear back from the schools I have applied to, but two of the three are in the Chicago area. University of Chicago Divinity School, Wheaton Graduate School (yeah, i know, they are on two completely different ends of the spectrum) and Duke Divinity. Want to study hermeneutics and the interpretation of sacred texts. Interesting and oh-so practical

Snark,

I live in Wheaton, in Gun Friendly DuPage County. Give me a shout when you get here. (I went through ROTC at Wheaton College.)

The bad news is both firearms you mentioned are verbotten in Chicago. Resident/non-resident makes no difference, you cannot legally posses either of them in Chicago and there's no way to register a Handgun in Chicago if it wasn't registered when the law took effect. Some of the South Cook County Suburbs are Home Rule which means that they may or may not follow the Cook County AWB.

Both firearms, however are good to go in DuPage county.

If you end up at U of C Divinity, the easiest thing to do would be to live in Indiana and take the Vomit Comet (South Shore Line train) to school. Hyde Park is an "okay" area but it's surrounded by some pretty bad parts of Chicago.

Good luck on getting into Wheaton !!!

I'll second the motion on living in northwest Indiana. It's about as gun-friendly as you can stand.
But there's more. It's more affordable there, with generally lower taxes and much lower housing costs.
Since the I80/94 mainline got redone, even driving is sometimes possible.
We have a number of Hoosier friends due to our membership in a gun club in Chesterton. Many simply live in Merrillville, Dyer, and so forth, and commute to Hyde Park (UofC) or downtown.
I should mention that after a lifetime in Cook County (I grew up in Rogers Park, Chicago), we're going house hunting in Chesterton tomorrow.
Handgun registration was closed in Chicago in 1982. This is the same gun-ban device used by the District of Columbia, that was struck down by the Circuit Court and is now going before the Supremes.
Don't look for Daley to roll over easily if the Supreme Court knocks out this scheme. This is a guy who demolished a popular public airport in the middle of a Sunday night without so much as a hiccup.
Stay out of Chicago, and Cook County, at all costs. The County has a new gun-ban psuedo-registration ordinance in the hopper waiting to be sprung. It requires registration of everything but doesn't provide for registration.
