Hi everyone, im new here looking for some information on legal guns in the state of MA.

The laws are a little unclear and hard to decipher from time to time, well who am i kidding, ALL THE TIME.

Anyway, im looking at a couple specific AR's and i know whats allowed by MA law, but as i know with handguns, there are specific models allowed or not allowed, so im looking for some answers, hoping someone can give me them.

Im looking at a Colt AR-15 Match Target, MT6700 with a 20 inch barrel. Its shipped with a 9 round magazine, no flash hider or flash suppresor and has a fixed stock. So TECHNICALLY, its legal for MA, atleast according to the rules set down, but does anyone know if this specific model is legal for MA?

The other model im looking at is the AR15 Match Target, MT6731 Carbine, again with a fixed stock, no flash hider or flash suppresor and 9 round magazine.

It SEEMS these guns should be Mass legal, but its hard to say, trying to find information is kinda like pulling teeth from a very angry tiger. IMPOSSIBLE.

Hope someone can help me out!

IANAL, but I live here.

IMHO, it is legal if:
  • It was manufactured before the 1994 AWB took effect (preban); OR
  • It has none of the following: flash-hider, bayonet lug, collapsible stock (post-ban configuration).
As you implied, mags over 10-rnds have to be pre-ban manufacture date.

I am surprised a MA dealer hasn't been able to help you out; call one up and ask if you can have whichever one shipped to him, and he'll handle the transfer--should get a pretty definite answer. Let me know if you need a dealer rec.

Well, ive talked to a couple, and one of them doesnt deal with AR type guns at all, and the other said they would look into it but never got back to me so.

For what its worth, both of the guns i mentioned SHOULD be MA legal, but im not sure if like handguns in MA, they have to be approved by specific model or not.

Strange attitude for a potential $1,200 sale. Business must be booming.

Given that it doesn't yet have any such prohibited features - can you just buy a AR15 stripped lower online, have it transferred, and then just assemble a compliant from aftermarket stuff? Seems like that would be relatively simple and is the route I went for my AR15 (though just because of the AWB I made it about as "naughty" of an AR as I could - carry handle, bayonet lug, collapsible stock - its got it all :). All those things are legal here though).

They do not. Try this site: not very helpful, perhaps, but very official!

Or he doesn't have a lawyer on retainer, and his potential volume of AR-15 clones doesn't justify the legal risk of making a mistake, in his opinion.

Ok thanks for the help guys! Youve been exceptionally more helpful than the last forum i was on looking for help. Literally just got quoted the regs and then was ignored from then on.

Anyhow, Its good to know that as long as it meets those standards its legal and doesnt have to pass seperate inspection like handguns do.

As for the shops not wanting to sell AR's, ive been told a few times that its just straight out difficult and a lot of stores just dont want to deal with the hassle.

I was told that despite being ON the MA approved list, all Glocks arent legal in the state, unless made before 98, which cuts out a good chunk of Gen3's and all Gen4's. So with laws like that, i can see why gun stores would rather just not bother.

Someone in a previous post, posted a link to fsguns.com, which is the website for Four Seasons Firearms in Woburn, Ma. They are probably my favorite local gunshop, and aren't afraid of AR sales :) Today they are open normal hours, closed by noon tomorrow for the holiday weekend

Any Ar rifle that you buy in Ma that is not pre ban will be modified to be sold in Ma.
Primarily no flash hider, bayonet lug and no adjustable stock. The previous post suggested Four Seasos in Woburn, they are the place to go for any AR as they Handle the major brands. Give them a call and ask for the owner,Carl he'll do you right.

From what i know, even having an the threads for a flash suppressor or flash hider is illegal in MA.

But from what ive found out so far, the AR im looking to buy is MA legal so, thats good. Im more of a match/target rifle type girl so im not looking for a carbine or ultra compact AR so, most of the features im looking for, are MA legal.
